ECM downloads not in computer??!!!
« on: November 13, 2008, 05:11:53 AM »

Bought my bike a couple of months ago (2003 FXSTDSE) and took it to the dealership for a full service. I had them check the bikes computer to see if my set up was correct and they said that its in the stock configuration and didnt see any downloads. I have all the reciepts from the original owner from when the V&H Pro Pipe (reciept says Pro Pipe HS 84-01 ST) was purchased and installed at the dealer. Reciept also says that it has a 88" Stage 1 EFI Kit. My bikes a 95" so I dont understand that either. Anyway, they flash upgraded the download that is currently in it. The service guy told me that I can have a power commander (i think thats what he called it) put in but that they are spendy (around $500) or I can have a download done for about $150 that will match my set up, but I dont know if I trust that information. The technician took me aside and said that the download will be good enough for the way I plan to ride and that I dont need to spend the big dollars for the power commander.

Can anyone tell me what I should have downloaded to make sure I have the correct set up? I dont know anything about downloads, tuning and maping or what the difference is.

I just want to make sure my bike is running as it should be and I have nothing to compare it to since this is my first cruiser. The tech that test rode it said it seemed to be running normal to him. The only thing we both noticed was that the bike idles a little high (about 1100 rpms vs 1000) sometimes when I come to a stop. I dont know if it is hurting it to run it the way it is but I dont want to do any damage by continuing to ride it the way it currently sits. The bike has 8800 miles on it.

Thanks,
Ray

Hey Ray,

I would suggest that you find a good tuner in your area and have the bike dyno tuned. Try asking other bikers that have had their bikes done and you should be able to find someone good. I'm not sure what the tech meant when he said that a stock download would be good enough for the way you ride, unless your riding style includes riding a bike that isn't quite tuned properly. If your bike has had a 95 inch kit and a Pro Pipe, it just makes good sense to have it tuned to maximize the performance modifications. Just my opinion...

I agree with the tune.  These CVO bikes are not stock bikes per say and the Harley Race Tuner or new Super Pro Tuner will have a download that will be real close to your set up.  Will this download make your bike totally efficient and optimized, in my opinion no.  These downloads will run the bike but the bike should be professionally tuned to smooth out the fuel, ignition timing, and all the support tables for start up, idle, and Accel/Decel.  No (2) bikes are ever identical because injectors and fuel pump flows are not matched from bike to bike.  There is documented testing that shows as much as an 8% swing/delta between injectors.  A lot of people ride there bikes with just a download and are happy, but if they ever road a bike that was professionally tuned and tuned correctly they would feel the difference.
