OK, here is my dilemma, I'm not trying to cheap out, just want to spend the least amount as possible on a good tuner that I can grow with.  Initially I only want to change pipes and breather.  I plan on keeping this bike for many years, so later I may want to do cams, heads, etc.. and want something that can accomodate.

So, I'm between the mastertune, harley pro tuner, or pcIII.  Input, suggestions on which and where to purchase for best price.

I recommend the Daytona Twin Tech.  A little pricey up front, but you never have to dyno since it "self-tunes".  At $400 per dyno, you save a bunch of $s as you make changes.  Jim (HD-Dude) sells them.  I have it on my pumpkin and love it since I can tweak the tune anyway that I want to whenever I want to.

Any of the tuners that tune the Delphi ECU are the best way to go.  The least expensive solution is Direct Link as you should only have to pay for the USB Key.  Most tuners have the other hardware needed to flash and program the ECU.  All of the tuners that tune the Delphi ECU will yield the same final results.  SERT, SEST and Direct Link all have identical features.  The new MasterTune has some extra features that are nice, but the bottom line is the quality of the tune and they will all yield close to the same results.

The MasterTune (they were the manufacture of the original SERT) is a good buy and i think the group buy is still good? And if you are familiar with SERT, MasterTune will fit right in, as all SERT MT6 maps adapt to MasterTune. The functionality between SERT and MasterTune is identical with the exception MasterTune has more tuning functions and tools, their package offers autotune with narrow band sensors.. Their tech support is real good, they are quick to answer any questions and provide helpful suggestions. I am using MasterTune with the DTT Twin Scan and wide band sensors on my 2008 Ultra with the Jim's 131. I am extremely happy with this set up.
I recently started out with one of MasterTunes base maps and completed my tuning cycle using the DTT Twin scan data.  The bike is running awesome with consistent 13.6-14.1 AFR's, instant starts, smooth idle, no decile popping and a good warm up cycle. Im a happy camper with MasterTune and if you want to add the DTT Twin Scan, they work well together or you can use MasterTunes built in auto tune but you are stuck with narrow band sensing.  :2vrolijk_21:

JB,

I have the Rinehart true duels and SE heavy breather on my bike (identical to yours in black diamond/silver dust.)  I initially had the bike tuned with the PC III but the bike ran hot - the heat management system would actuate (as designed) at idle and drop off the rear cylinder (annoying.)  The bike was professionally tuned at Carl's Speed Shop, Daytona and peaked at 95.82HP; 115.87 torque. Subsequently (through this site) I learned about the Master Tune tuner (designed and modified by the original HD engineer who designed the original HD SERT.)  I communicated with a gentleman named Erwin Weaver (Doc) and had actually had an opportunity to meet him and pick his brain about the same issues.  He's a custom engine builder and highly recommended the Master Tune tuner.  The reasons are multiple, starting with the fact that the PC III bypasses the O2 sensors (they're left in-place, but not plugged in to anything.)  And according to Doc,  the sensors feed info to the ECM much more than environmental stuff.  But the main reason I went with the Master Tune is that (IF YOU HAVE THE BIKE TUNED BY A VERY EXPERIENCED TECHNICIAN) there is an "adjustment" option designed into the Master Tune software to adjust the sensitivity of the throttle by wire.  My technician was was able to smooth out the throttle and eliminate a significant amount of the "squirrelliness" to the throttle.  (I was having a difficult time adjusting to the combination of lack of clutch "friction zone" and touchy throttle, especially making a tight right hand turn into an open lane on a three lane boulevard with cross-traffic at full speed.)

I had the bike re-tuned at Gator Harley Davidson, Leesburg, FL.  The service manager, Tommy Tolsch, knew exactly what I wanted and re-tuned the bike to my satisfaction.   Runs great; smooth, cool, and got the same numbers out of the tune: 95.25HP @ 4900 rpm; 115.27 torque @ 3700 rpm.

Good luck,
DS

So if I'm reading this right, if I go to wideband O2 sensors I can use the DTT twin scan autotune.  Does that software come with the mastertune module, or is it available to download?

For now, all I'm changing is pipes and breather.  I would say a canned map will get me by until I can get some miles on it and get a dyno tune.

No, you cant go with the DTT Auto Tune but you can use DTT Twin Scan and their Wide Band Sensors in conjunction with MasterTune. This allows you do do data records through their (DTT's) software which assist you in setting up the tuning files in MasterTune. It is not an AutoTune function but very close and the next best thing. MasterTune is package to do the same thing, but you are stuck with the stock narrow band sensors.  Visit Daytona Twin Tecs web site and read some of there tech notes, this will give you a better understanding.

The Daytona Twin Tech comes with "wide-band" sensors, and you have complete control of the tune
