Thought I would share another miracle close to home. Turner was just over a year old when he was diagnosed almost a year ago with stage 4 cancer. Here is his story off the caringbridge site.
Turner was diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma on December 27, 2007. The cancer originated on his adrenal gland on top of his kidneys and spread to his right orbital bone and left mandible. We were checked into St. Jude Children's Research Hospital on December 27, 2007. The same day the doctors took a bone marrow sample to identify the cancer and Turner was given a radiation treatment that day to prevent the tumor in his face from spreading. The next day surgeons put in a central line for him to receive his chemotherapy treatment and he was given another radiation treatment. That night Turner started his first round of chemotherapy treatment. He has done really well with his chemotherapy, and has not had any nausea. Once he is done with this round of chemotherapy we will get to go home for a few weeks until the second round of chemotherapy begins. The plan is to go through a few rounds of chemotherapy to shrink the tumor in his face and abdomen. Once the tumor in his abdomen gets smaller, surgeons will go in and remove the tumor. He will then receive radiation to get rid of any little pieces that got left behind. Then he will get a stem cell transplant from stem cells that they will harvest from him. For those of you that know Turner, you know he is a tough little guy and he will get through this.
We would like to thank everyone for the love and kindness we have received already. We would like to especially thank everyone for the many prayers for Turner. We feel them everyday. It is hard to explain the feeling of calmness that Sarah and I have had throughout this difficult time, and we know that it is a result of all the many prayers and God's love. We know that God is with us and He is with Turner, and He will be with us every step of the way. It is times like these when we realize how truly blessed we are to have such a wonderful son in Turner, incredible family and friends, and a loving God that gives us hope in every situation. We ask that you please continue to pray for Turner that the treatments he receives will get rid of the cancer, and believe that God will give us a miracle and heal Turner.
Well 11 months later, a child that wasn't given very good odds to live. A child that was suppose to lose eyesite in the eye that had the tumor behind it due to the radiation, had scans on his cancer. Here is how it went.
Hi Everyone,
Well Turner had his scans today and we were able to get results from the MIBG scan. This is the one where the contrast "lights" up if there is any trace of cancer. Dr. Furman told us today that
nothing showed up on that scan! The spot that was in/behind his eye was gone. There was no cancer left. Keith and I cannot tell you all how thankful and relieved we are to get these results. I know that the doctors at St. Jude have done a fantastic job treating Turner, but I believe that it is only by God's grace that Turner has come this far. To think that not even a year ago we were given very little hope because of the stage of Turner's cancer, and now in less than a year the cancer is gone.
We believe that God has worked a miracle in our precious Turner. We want to thank all of you for your continued prayers for our family. We go back in on Monday to get final results and also to do blood work to see if Turner is ready to start round four of his home meds. He will finish three more rounds of the meds and then we will do scans again. I ask Dr. Furman today if he thought that they would have to do radiation to Turner's eye and he said probably not. Again, that is another prayer answered. After the next three rounds of meds they will make a decision whether or not to do 6 more months of a different med or stop treatment.
Today has been a wonderful and VERY thankful day in the Lee house!!
Love to all,
Sarah
