I screwed up big time!
« on: November 16, 2008, 02:34:16 PM »

I don't know what to say. I am so embarrassed by what I did. Usually I can fix and find problems whether they are electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneudraulic, pneumatic or anything else. I do not want to blame my screw up on my dis-abilities. I could say I was tired from messing with the wife's exhaust leak on the front cylinder for three days but I won't. I'll just tell y'all what I did not find. You know I've been asking questions about parts, and the wife has the bottom end parts on order. I have the tools from Georges, a really good guy in my book. I was hearing all kind of noise out of my wife's bike in the cam area. It sounded like the front chain making noise. I checked the obvious that being the fake timing cover for loose screws. Well I went out this AM and cranked her bike hoping the noise fixed itself because I want to ride and I can't if I don't bring my tail with me (wife). So I cranked it, it's making noise. I look down and I can see the little cover rattling bad. I did not want to say anything to the wife knowing parts are on order to upgrade the bottom end for both bikes. I did though! I just feel so ashamed that I missed it, even after checking it. It's just unbelievable that I screwed up like that, even the wife did not believe that I missed it. Those screw had come loose before quite awhile back when I got the little skull cover, they have the HD thread lock on them but I guess it's crap. I put Blue on them this time. I almost put red on them but I would not let my emotions get the better of me. I am going to go ahead and let the parts come in and I will replace at my leisure now. We are suppose to go to S.Carolina just before Christmas for a week on the bikes, so I would have been pushed to get her bike done anyway because of my back. So now it's y'alls turn to harass me now. I'll just take a few extra pain meds and I won't even remember y'all did. ;D

Sometimes it's the most obvious we miss, sorry for the wasted time worrying about it.

Take a ride and all will be fine. :2vrolijk_21:

I hear ya guys! I do feel better now but that's because I was out tinkering with the bikes. I fixed a few of those annoying little issues that I always forget about, like the left side bag that the lock always gets stuck on the hinge and won't shut ever since it was new. Fixed the wife's left side bag lock that lost the spring, little arm, and nut. I found the spring and little arm, but no nut. HD charged me a .25 cents for that cheap nut. I did use Red on it. I also put the covers back on the throttle/idle cable adjusters.
Check this out. Linda(wife) wanted me to go to Lowe's with her to get a Blower. We have been getting the Troy Bilt with the 4 cycle motors. These things are so nice compared to that two stroke stuff. Now I will have some small motors to tinker with. Anyway, we go by Harbor Freight and I pick up a torque wrench that will do foot pounds. My other two are inch pound and not enough range to cover somethings I have to torque. On our way home I see this guy putting a red stackable tool chest out in his front yard. We go get gas for Linda's new Blower, then we go back and I ask him if he is selling it he said yes and also told me he had the part with the wheels and he would sell both for 10 bucks. They were Craftsman tool chest and roll around, a little greasy, couple of dents. I took both and gave him 15 bucks. So I'll stop now and go find some more bolts at Summit Racing.

I ain't saying nothin'....  Except to say that I am not the guy that finished putting the red bikes motor back together last winter and rode it over to to the dyno ship with the fender cover still on the front fender.  Whomever that idiot was, however, was just really lucky it ever got caught up in the wheel and front brake line.

Wildrat-you live and learn around here.  At least you know what the noise was before you did the work.
If it weren't a post from TC (Midnight rider) about his loose spark plug finned shield, I wouldn't have known where to look when I had a noise from the LH side of the bike and one of my fiined spark plug bridges were loose also.  Thought I had major problems but fortunately didn't.

Don, you're telling on yourself now.  Must have been why the stealth chrome inner primary cover fell off.  Maybe you never put it on and it's in your garage some place.    :)

He's mentioned it....

I couldn't figure out the silly grin on his face when I pulled around back to the big door to roll the bike on inside the dyno trailer.  It was crappy weather.  Snow and ice on the ground.  Lots of ice on the gravel drive to get around to where you'd go inside to the dyno.  So I thought he was just enjoying my frog-walk style getting the bike around there.  At least that's what I thought until he reached down, grabbed the cover and said "you forget this?"

you gotta fix it before its broken anyway...

I am doing the same thing.  Plan (hope, pray) that my tensioners will have lots of meat on them when I dig into upgrade to gears myself.

I am going to do mine next year when I know there are 2 months in VA that I cannot ride - can ride all year here in NC.

Be glad you had an easy one and can do it on a schedule now!

Yep, On a schedule alright, my schedule, they might get done in a couple of years. Your tensioners should be fine if you don't have 75K or more on the bike. That is what was dis-stressing me about the wife's bike and the tensioner, it's only got 25K on it. there must be something about to go wrong with the bike's bottom end because I have found that when  for some reason when something like this happens there is a reason. for instance timing cover rattling, maybe it's a sign telling me to check here, or fix, especially since the parts are coming. Well, catch y'all later, I'm going to work. I mean watch TV.
