Peeling Paint on SERG 3 Starter-- Replace or Touch Up?
« on: November 19, 2008, 12:00:29 PM »

And the beat goes on...  Just when you think your work in progress is getting there, a new issue.  Paint is peeling from starter and looks like it's going to get worse.  Called dealer who says he has to call HD.  Calls back and says HD wants to repaint starter meaning bike will be down for who knows....  Not the biggest issue but....  Thoughts??  Strategy?  Thank you!!

What a cheap-ass lame parsimonious response.  Next time you write them a check after you've got the parts in hand tell them you'd like to hold on to the check for awhile to get the calligraphy looking just right.

I would look at it as an opportunity to replace it with the chrome version - at a deep discount of course because of the inconvenience. Time to negotiate and keep or sell the spare once it is repainted. The black hole looks great with chrome!

I posted too slow apparently.

That's what I was thinking.

Greg , Sorry to hear about this. I don't understand why a black starter is on a gun metal (color of the engine) engine in the first place.  :nixweiss: I agree with others that a chrome starter is the way to go. You might even get replaced straight across.   :drink:

My 08 SERK has paint peeling on the starter at the top rear bolt also. Same response from HD - HD told dealer to "touch up"  :sauer005:

Argued to no avail, really pizzed me off but they wouldn't budge!!  :nixweiss: >:(

Difficulty there is if they are already choosing against replacing the starter for its cosmetic deficiency they're certainly not going to give credit for that same starter against the price of a new chromed unit.

That's what I expected.  My Dealer wants to send it out to be repainted if that's the final case, I'd rather send it out to be chromed.... Going to see the dealer Sat. and we'll see....

They're actually planning a complete repaint rather than a touch up?  That'd worry me more actually.  Most automotive unit rebuilding shops bead/sand blast or wire brush the cases before they paint them.  That's fine with gutted unit that's being rebuilt.  Now someone is messing about in an otherwise perfectly good starter though.  It's too easy to picture a painter who doesn't know much about little electric motors doing all the prep and paint.

While I was in talking to my service manager about the powdercoating flaking off the inner primary, he told me about a customer of theirs that had paint flaking off his starter.  He said that they painted it first.  Then more paint flaked off and they replaced the starter.  They rode the bike about 15 minutes and parked it outside and when they went out to ride home, paint had flaked off the new starter.  They did one more new starter without any luck.  He then switched it to the chrome starter and put the painted starter part number down on the work order and the customer was happy.  They had to eat the cost difference between the painted and chromed starter, but they did it for their customer.

This is the dealer that's replacing my inner primary and the new SE rear wheel for pitting chrome.

Ya gotta love a dealership that takes care of their customers like this.

Not that you can go to your dealership and demand this, but at the end you still have to be happy or take it to a higher level.

Good luck with your starter.

Keep us informed as to what they end up doing for you...

I took the problem to dealer principal and then HD Customer Dis-service. Not sure I could have taken it anywhere else. Waste of energy past that point for me.

Does anyone know where the starters are purchased from for HD and whether or not the powdercoating on said part is done in house?

Don't know where but I think they're painted, not powdercoated.  I'll find out more at the dealer Sat.
