Anyone else have this issue?
« on: November 19, 2008, 02:10:47 PM »

When I walk up to the bike and get my gear on, I usually go all the way to ACC to unlock the bags and all.  Seems like when I do this, unless I go all the way back to lock, then to Start, the injectors do not fully prime and the bike will not start, and sometimes will backfire after cranking.  After cranking, I can hear the fuel pump whine again and the injectors prime, bike fires right up.  When going from ACC to Start I do hear the pump, but it seems to not run long enough.  Odd problem, and it always starts the second time, but it is irritating.

Are you waiting for the engine light in the speedo to go off before cranking? Don't get defensive, I've seen some odd people on bikes.

If you don't let the priming cycle complete you will always experience hard starts on a fresh cold start motor.

Well, that depends.  Before......when I started Thump, if I waited until the priming cycle completed, she's turn over 4-5 times before starting.  If I hit the start button immediately after moving the "run/stop" switch to "run," she's fire right up.

Never experienced hard starting when starting before the prime completes on the Blue bike either.  All my other stuff has been carbureted, so wouldn't know about them.  They're cranky anyway when they're cold........but I love 'em like that.   :huepfenlol2:

Absolutely not offended ;)  I always wait for the fuel pump stop whining, and all the lights to go out on the speedo face.  When changing from the ACC to Start, I do hear the pump cycle, but it will just clunk clunk when cranking and not catch.  It is pretty damn repeatable.  Seems to me likethe fuel pump should never stop until it reaches the correct pressure.  Is there a Fuel pressure regulator on these bikes?  Sorry, my first FI Harley.

Do you have a Power Commander on your bike?

There was a technical memo a while back about waiting for the cycle to complete and engine light to go out.  Said it was not necessary to do so - turn 'er on and crank 'er up.  Shouldn't matter.

That's what I always did on the melon, Jerry.  something about the PCIII USB that would make it start hard if I didn't hit the GO button right after I turned her on.

Yes it is in the tank.
Can't say why it won't start sometimes though.

I always wait for the light.  Usually starts OK, but sometimes cranks and dies with a little bang.  I'll try the quick start next time!

I have the same bike as you, mine used to clunk real loud when firing up but don't notice after the 905 upgrade. I wonder if the new acr's changed that it does fire smoother now.

TRICKYDICK, if your run stop switch is on and you slide passed ign. to acc. the ecm will try to turn on the pump but
you slipped by it to fast to prime the fuel system. so when you go back to ign. it wont prime because it will only
charge the fuel system every other time. try keeping the run/stop switch off untill your ready to start the bike.
give it a try and see if it helps.        axil
