flickering oil light
« on: November 21, 2008, 10:12:19 AM »

while out yesterday i notice my oil light on the tank console flickering. i know i had pressure and the bike was running/sounding/feeling normal

i have both the "idiot" light and an autometer gauge with its own sender

at 80MPH i had about 40PSI on the autometer gauge oil temp was around 135-140 and my oil light was flickering.

has anyone had a stock pressure sender go bad?

proximity wise engine pressure is slightly closer to the autometer sender then the stock sender see my drawing below

I would say it is time for a new oil sending unit.

I would try the sending unit, i had a similar problem last year. I found the identical sending unit that came with the Harley at Napa.

Neal;
The oil light is activated by a connection to ground. I had the same issue with a customers bike and traced it to an intermittent short to groung on the wire leaving the sending unit. there is a strain relief on the case below the cam cover that was the cuplrit. You can also check the sending unit with a volt ohm meter. Meter terminal leaving the sending unit to ground with the engine off it should read less than 1 ohm. With the engine at idle it should read infinity.

Between Jim's advice and Ernies, Jim's certainly sounds cheaper but Ernies sounds more fun!

So my advice is, do what both say.

Get rid of the other bike and an 02 and an 09 in the garage works!

I guess we better start tipping the waiter better if that's gonna happen?

sounds easy enough to check, will have to dig this thread back up once things thaw out

Holy Cow, that might be a tough one considering i hand carried the failed unit in and walked out with an identical new one. I can check to see if any numbers are visible on the unit installed, but I doubt it. I'll see what i can come up for ya tonight.

You keep your bike in the freezer or what?  :huepfenjump3:

BTW, I still like my suggested fix...

i did a search on their site and i believe # TS5005SB is the correct sensor. In any case if you take your bad one with you they will find the correct sensor for you. I think any auto parts should be able to do this. Cost around $12 bucks, over half saving from the Harley Parts store

Sorta looks like the small block chevy sensor and may be.  Have several in my roll away.

Neal, there is a very easy way to see if you're grounding the light from a chafe somewhere short of the sending unit.  Just unplug the lead at the sending unit.  If the light still occasionally comes on you know you're intermittently grounding elsewhere.

Might or might not be it.  But since you have a separate pressure indicator it's an easy way to harmlessly check.
