That's frightening.  Admitting they've got a piece out in the field that might not last three oil changes and that they'll replace it for free every 15k miles; forever.  Someone screwed up.  Someone rushed something to the street to sell the products now without worrying about what the rider will have to deal with later.  Someone..... well.... behaved like Harley Davidson.

Is it really that hard to spec a bearing?  On a design that's been around as long as the HD V-twin has?

"Harley-Davidson has preliminarily determined the inner primary bearing on your 2006 Dyna motorcycle will require replacement at 15,000 mile intervals. The bearing will be replaced by your authorized Harley-Davidson dealer at 15,000 miles and at subsequent 15,000-mile intervals, at no cost to you."

What's particularly amazing to me is that HD is apparently planning on doing this bearing change on all 2006 Dynas.  Knowing this while they still knowingly produce more of the same defect.  I could much more easily forgive them if they caught something on the first (however many had already been made) and then fixed the problem.  But they seem to be aware of the defect and choose to keep making the same blunder, placing the problem in the customer's hands.

I wonder how many dealers will tell a potential Dyna buyer about all this before the papers are signed? (This is a rhetorical question).

Customers are supposed to be given this info prior to purchase, but I've seen several posts on other sites where they said it was not mentioned. HD is planning on a large percentage of Dynas never getting 15K miles.  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Another item that would worry me more than a little is the fact that they changed to plain bearings for the cams.  Unless they found a way to maintain at least 40 lb of oil pressure at all times, I don't see this being a very good idea.  It is rather unusual to mix plain bearings into a roller and ball bearing engine.  Of course, plain bearings are much cheaper than good roller or ball bearings.

You would have thought the MoCo engineers would have learned their lesson after the dreaded twin cam rear cam bearing fiasco a few years back. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

You know, it used to be standard practice on a major new part or system to do extensive real world road testing long before any customer ever saw one.  If I remember correctly, H-D put more than a million miles on the Revolution before they ever sold one.  Looks like they should have put at least 15000 miles on one of these before putting it into production.  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

. A lubricant change for the primary chain and transmission is now specified at 1,000 miles, and at every 5,000 miles thereafter, and

. An inner primary bearing replacement is required at 15,000-mile intervals.

Why bother changing oil with disposable bearings on board? [smiley=confused5.gif]

IMHO, this has nothing to do with the inability to properly spec out bearings for a particular useage, load, rpm, etc.

Without regard to what actuaries and other bean counters predict, that kind of a service life absolutely means there will be guys stranded on the side of the road with a greater regularity than modern manufacturing standards would otherwise normally have be the case.  Coupled with all the other irregularities that are part and parcel of dealing with Harley Davidson you've got to wonder when Those People (thank you Robert E. Lee) in the suits and HD silk neck ties are going to realize that someday, sometime, after enough incidents, some judge is going to certify a class of users who have all had similar unacceptable experiences and untenable problems.

It's almost as if the MoCo invites some mother of a class action to defend itself against.  That's bad enough from a legal standpoint; and classes are harder to certify now and more difficult to try now than they've been in the past (most go to Federal courts now).  But even so, from a PR / advertising standpoint it couldn't get much.  The company will be in the position of publicly defending itself against people with its own name tattoed on their arms.  I honestly just don't have a clue how in the hell you "spin" that scenario to make it look anything other than bad.
