Replacing Spark Plug Wires
« on: August 22, 2005, 07:36:56 PM »

I just recently purchased orange plug wires for my  [smiley=pumpkin.gif] (pumpkin). I did this before I looked to see where the other end of wires ended up at coil. After purchasing and getting back home I found that the coil (if that is what it is called on a fuel injected bike) is up under gas tank on top of front cylinder. The space is to small for me to get my hand/fat finger in there to get them loose and also to run the wires back correctly thru holders. It appears that the easiest way to get them replaced (other then having someone else do it) is to lift tank up.

Has anyone tackled this project before that could give some advise to a novice? I'm off to read the shop manual but any tips/tricks to get this job done (by me) would be appreciated. I'm trying to wean myself off the "stealership" Thanks in advance.  [smiley=laugh.gif]

I replaced my wires a while back and I did indeed lift the tank up. Remove the seat. Remove the bolt at the rear of the tank. Tilt it up using something to hold it up that won't damage the finish. The fairing gets in the way so you will have to manipulate it a bit. It is still a tight fit though. I sprayed silicone into the plug wire boot before sliding it onto the coil. Seemed to go on ok. BTW, I removed the SE plug wires within a week or so because I believe it was causing a slight miss at low rpm. Time will tell though because it was intermittent.

I'd remove the tank console as this will get you a little more clearance when tilt the tank forward and I'd use a small block of wood placed under the tank to keep it elevated without damaging your paint.

It may be easiest to just remove the tank completely and replace the stock black rubber crossover with the Braided Crossover they offer in the parts catalog at the same time.

In any case either drain the gas first or run it down as low as possible to reduce the weight of the tank while manuvering it.

Remember these bikes are SINGLE FIRE When you replace the wires make sure they go back on the same plug.

You're seeing it right.  Changing plug wires is a real Roseanne Barr.

LOL, and I thought it was just looking that way from a novice

It seems like I am always taking the tank off for one reason or other, and an item I found to be a huge assett is a Bro Flo fuel crossover. It snaps apart in the middle, with no gas spillage, and with the quick release fuel lines on our EFI bikes, it makes tank removal a breeze.

I got mine from Dennis Kirk.

OK...I need an intervention because...

I admit that I am too scared to remove my own tank!  There, I said it...yes, scared...that I will leak gas everywhere...that I will forget to disconnect something...that I will be holding the tank, slip, fall and damage it...I am pathetic, WFPathetic and a sorry example of a Harley Owner.  I need a beer...
