OIL IN AIR CLEANER COVER
« on: August 22, 2005, 08:02:48 PM »

My SEEG is a '05,purchased new in July,'04,and currently is just shy of 6,000 miles.
When bike was new I purchased and installed the Stage One intake,Screaming Eagle Slip Ons and rode bike to dealer and had the map download. No other engine mods after that. I'm pretty fussy and maintain the bike myself changing oil,Syn 3 only, about every 2,000 miles. Never have had to add any oil in between. Never have seen a drop of oil on engine. By chance I recently ran my hand along the bottom of air cleaner cover when cleaning bike and had a decent amount of oil on my rag. Wiped it dry and now whenever I finish a ride I check the cover and there's always a small amount of oil inside the cover but never enogh to drip onto the engine. Went round trip to Rolling Thunder (any Viet Vets out there?) and not any dripping but just always a small amount inside the chrome cover. Just curious if this is due to the open design of the breathers and is it normal to expect this? I have done the same mod on other twin cams in the past but did not notice the same symptom on them.
Note: Oil is not overfull-when cold, oil mark is indicating 1/2 quart low.

1/2 low which I assume is 1/2 way between min and max may be a little to much if you are topping it off to keep it there?  Mine likes just a little over the min about 1/4" and will throw anything more out the breather in a short time.   [smiley=nixweiss.gif]  Be safe JP

Thanks Pappy,I'm probably running a little too much oil. Next change I'll go lighter by 1/2 quart and see what happens. Seems to be the case that the right reccommended amount is a little too much.

Harley Bill,

You will probably want to take the cover off of your air filter and closely inspect the bottom of the filter medium if you have the blue and white filter H-D is currently using.  Those filters come with a small slip of paper in the box that states do not oil.  I have went through two of the filter elements because a small amount of blow by drips to the bottom of the filter and desolves the filter medium leaving you with only wire mesh to filter the air.  My bike doesn't blow enough into the filter to ever get any on the inside of the chrome filter cover, but it is enough to destroy the new and improved filter.  My dealer has switched me out to a K&N replacement at my request.  The previous filters were covered under waranty since they are supposed to be re-usable.  I think everyone with the blue and white filter should closely inspect the bottom edge occasionally.

Hey guys, can you give me a part number and is this item generally know by parts houses? I'm just not framiliar with this item. I suppose it replaces the filter cartridge that I installed as part of the Stage One Kit?
I know it's not a big deal ,but I go nuts when on occassion I get  the drips on the cam cover etc.
Thanks. [smiley=jalapeno.gif]

I originally had a K&N Filter.  Some dumb ass at the dealer over tightened my 3 little screws and wallowed out the holes to the point the air cleaner needed to be replaced.   That left only one issue.   They no longer sell the K&N replacment.

I called several dealers and was told they no longer stock them as Harley is now using that Blue / White piece of dung for the SE Air Cleaner.

I believe the K&N element for the SE air cleaner is part number HD0600 (at least that is the one for the old SE air cleaner that came with K&N originally).

I have been comtemplating the Ness Big Sucker myself but have a question for those much smarter than me. Would I have to put the bike back on the dyno if I went with this setup or would it be a bolt on and ride scenario. (Currently have high flow, RT, Rineharts) If I have to spend the extra cash for dyno time, then I probably won't do it. Thanks.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

I doubt it would make any difference in the flow of air. They are both similiar in surface area of the filters.

Thanks!! [smiley=beerchug.gif]
