I had this experience once I picked up my 09 SERG and it was driving me nuts.  Before I left Daytona, Jaybrake put on the prototype forward controls and it cured the problem instantly.  I think it has something to do with the pressure on the inner cover then anything.  If you adjust your foot shifter arms out a fraction of an inch it should cure this.

when my 00 SERG was new, it was impossible to find neutral...either hot or cold...I called Harley Tech support to report the issue and  to see if they had a fix for this condition. their suggestion was to increase RPM's slightly...to around 1500 with the clutch pulled in and in first gear...then step down on heel shift and it will slip right into neutral...this works!!...I now find myself slipping into neutral from first as I near coming to a stop...with bike rolling and a bout 5' to about 10' from complete stop....able to slip into neutral every time. I also have to use this technique on my softail as well....because it has a suicide foot clutch, and to have both feet on the ground at a stop, I need to be in neutral before comming to a complete stop.  :orange:

I think a big part of the problem is the effort it takes to overcome any friction in the system, which makes it too easy to shoot past neutral when everything finally starts moving.  Of course, that friction comes from several areas.  The linkage itself, as you noted, can add significant friction.  Then you have internal trans friction at the shift drum, shift forks and the shift rings.  Those are the parts that respond to better lubes.  One other area that makes a huge difference is clutch drag.  The old tactic of pulling the clutch, blipping the throttle, and then trying for neutral is based on the idea that the throttle blip will break the clutch plates loose.  Same thing works for that clunk going into first, btw.  Pull the clutch, blip the throttle, wait a few seconds, and then drop it into first with nary a sound or jerk.

Jerry,
That's some great info.  I didn't know that was the theory behind blipping the throttle.  Makes sense.  I always thought it was because of the low idle of the carburated bikes that you blipped to get the engine more up to speed prior to taking off so you wouldn't stall.  Shows you how much I know.   :nixweiss:

Trouble finding neutral?  Just checked and it's still there.

Jerry and Charlie, how does one blip a throttle?  If I'm trying to keep my tranny from sounding like I threw a hammer into it when I shift into first I want to get it right.

FYI , what usually happens with a thread like this is that those that have something constructive to say do so and the rest of us provide color commentary. Imagine Sunday Night Football without John Madden.

I agree ---the commentary is almost as important -  as a matter of fact after a few brews the commentary really starts to make sense. :drink:

Not sure if I've got all neutral or just free wheeling.  Only thing I know for sure is that until it's all buttoned back up all I can do now is sit on the saddle (on the floor) and make vroom vroom noises.
