6 Speed Trans Question
« on: August 26, 2005, 05:13:57 PM »

Does anyone have experience of upgrading to a 6 speed trans.  What did you like about the 6 speed?  Would you spend the money and do it again if you had the chance?

I have the HD 6 Speed, would have preffered the Baker DD6, however to long a wait for it. At 80 mph revs are around 3,100 - 3,200 RPM. No qualms with the HD 6 Speed. With the build I have I am getting better gas mileage than friend with 95" builds in their ULTRAs averaging 75 mphs.

My build is an 04 SE 103", heads reworked by SBC Phoeinx, Stock Pistons, S&S 585 Gear Drive, HD SERT, rest of engine stock, Compression is apprx. 10:2 1, Freedom Cycle exhaust, had Rineharts, only reason changed was due to an accident destroyed the original Rineharts. Engine & Trans is in an 03 Road Glide

With Rineharts Dynod at 106 HP and TQ at 116 lb ft, No dyno yet with Freedom Cycles Exhaust.

I would get another 6 Speed, probably Baker. No problems with the HD 6 Speed, have other 8,000 miles on it since April.

I installed the HD 6speed gear kit last month and then did a 3200 mile ride to CO, UT and AZ.

A guy in Durango (Steamworks bar) told me that Drag specialties made a part that plugs and seals the leak.  When I got home my dealer told me that it was actually a Harley part and sold it to me for $37.  Go figure why it does not come with the $1995 gear set.  The piece that comes with the gear set is 3/16th chrome and cantilevers over a 1/2 inch hole with one bolt and a gasket.  The gasket did not roll, it just can't seal with the span of the hole without another bolt.  The new piece is working fine.  The leak was not bad, just messy on a yellow color.

Love my 6 sp.  The bike pulls from 2200 rpm's and up.  3200 rpm's between 95-100, has no problem with hills, even at 6000 ft above sea level.  I get a whine in 4th at 3000 rpm's but that just reminds me what gear I am in. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Just put the SE 6 speed complete trans in my FBSE.  ILOVE IT!! It is great for crusing dow the highway at 70 to 75 turing around 2200 to 2800 rpm.  Ran it up to 110mph & was still going strong. Shifts much easier than the stock 5 speed.  Well worth the money.  I also did a lot of other changes to my 05 FBSE while it was getting the make over from by visit to a local ditch, ( no water was in the ditch).  Will post complete detaile of upgrade with pictures soon.

Installed the HD 6 speed right from new(complete tranny). Also installed the reduction gears in the primary and secondary. Have 17,000km(10,563 miles) on her. Cruise at 130kph(80MPH) at 3100 RPM in 6th or 3600 rpm in 5th. At 3100 rpm, she'll pull hills and hold her AOK. 45 miles per gallon. Some whining in 6th and 4th when loaded up and riding 2 up. Again'st a strong head wind have to drop to 5th because she won't hold in 6th. Rode up on 2 electra glides and a road king one day- all had 95 kits in them, and just played with them between 70 and 90 mph. Feels real good. Works well on long hauls. Don't feel I have to shift  sooner due to the lower gearings, but sure gives me the torque reving up to 4000 rpm in each shift to the next gear. Lot's of fun. Have rode at 120kph(75mph) at 2600rpm and holds this speed fairly well. Have to shift to 5th on hills to hold her though. Anything less than 120kph(75mph) - might as well stay in 5th.

Question: Doesn't the HD 6 speed have the exact same gearing for 1-5 as stock?  If so, the performance should be the same thru the first 5 gears, right?  So all it would add is another gear on the highway....since the 103 seems to really be in it's sweet spot at 75, wonder if I would be trading away that instant roll-on power I now have on the highway for a few lower rpms....so does the Baker have different gearing ratios, that why some of you guys like it?

Elvis, on the highway 5th gear is the same on both boxes.  So when you go to 6th for overdrive you are dropping the RPMs.  We are already not too far in to the sweet spot on the strokers in 5th at 70 mph.  Changing to 6th will mean a downshift for passing or for ascending a grade of some real distance or degree of incline.

SERyder, your dealer is mistaken; or at least woefully behind the time.  The parts necessary to make the 6 speed work with our hydraulic clutches has been available (from Harley) for almost a year now.
