OK guys, got'ta ask a few questions >Windshields<
« on: November 29, 2008, 10:09:55 PM »

For you young guys that can save an old coot a little reading time. My eyes are killing me. ::)

Windvest or HD detachable (that will actually fit the SEFB)

What do you think? Which one or are there others that I haven't tripped over yet?

Yes 2soaper as rainman said I used the Nostalgic Detachable King-Size Windshield for FL Softail Models (57140-05) on my bike and it fits fine giving about an inch of clearance at the bottom of the tack housing, I especialy like the old Nostalgic look with the Harley badge inside the horseshoe. You can see this windshield at the Harley dealer mounted on the flstn called the Deluxe.

I was also going to  use the Deluxe bracket for my road lamps but my dealer installed the incorrect bracket, you may not be able to see this from the pic below.

Thank you, sir, for that "young guys" comment ;-)
I guess you'd like to add the windshield to your Screamin' Eagle Fat Boy? I have the same front on my Fat Boy, and use the regular full size H-D detachable windshield. In my mind, it is too big, since I cannot see over the windshield, it is rather in front of me. This is very bad in the rain. As a result, I'd go with the newer detachable H-D windshield. In any case detachable, because any windshield will interfere with the looks of that neat bike. Try to look at P/N 58275-95 (careful you need to verify with the dealer, which windshield actually fits, there are subtle differences).

Ride safely,
Louis

Keep in mind that whatever windshield you decide to use you can cut it down to fit you. A Roto-Zip works fine for cutting and than use some plastic polish to clean up the edges.  :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks guys...

I too like the look of the old style HD shield and yes, Puzzled, I've cut a few down before. Isn't that just the most fun you've had since high school prom night :bananarock:?

To be honest here I would like to hear from someone with a windvest too. Although it looked weird to me at first it's starting to grow on me. I also hear that Memphis Shades makes one but can't find it.

I've got both.  The windvest is a beautiful product but useless for me - too much turbulence.  The H-D detachable is ugly and too big to see over but feels good on cold mornings.  I only use the windshield in the winter (ride year round) and do prefer no windshield until the temperature dips to the 40's.

Rubber side down.

Bill,

Did you get the 14 or 16" windvest?

It's looking like that is the way I will go.

I went with WindVest 14" and it is a great product with top notch chrome and fasteners. I was getting pummeled by the wind on my SE FatBoy. Got some good advice, and went with setup seen below (On the Right).  :2vrolijk_21:

Can't go wrong with the WindVest unless you are looking for more protection or insulation from the environment. Under those conditions, I'd get a bigger and better one to suit your prerequisites.

Hoist,

Long time friend. Hey it's easy to do the stock wind shield on the SERK. It is the largest windshield I have ever used !! And, in comparison to others, I was waiting for the Kuryakyn new fairing, and see if they included the SERK to the list of compatibility. The sales guy was braggin' bigtime about it being released soon?. who know?

I have been mulling around the fairing thing for about 6 months now. The colder it gets, the more I mull. lol I am used to the Los Angeles scene; but now in Central California and at the beach, it gets Hella Cold here. In LA I would be wearing a speedo in December. 250 miles north & west, the speedo is a oil rag. Looks better that way too. lol

Happy Holidays to you and yours Howie.

I ran the same smoke shield on my RK and it was great. Much better than stock height. I run an 8" on my POSE EG

Mike also has the same year and color combo as my SEFB. Looks good.

You guys got me leaning the 14" way. I'm 5' 11" and the last thing I want to do is have to look through a shield. I will be using this only for longer rides when higher speeds come to play. Hops around the mountains will go virgin.

The gray tint looks great, the clear looks pretty good too. Man, decisions, decisions....

Oh, I do appreciate the replies, TYVM.

HeHe!!! Thanks Mike! You too man! All the best!!! :drink:

Funny chit man! Cold in LA! ::) ;D ;D ;D

Forgot about that when I asked. Ya don't really need one there at all I guess. I only have a W/S on the SERK, not any of my street bikes. But that's as far as I go re the "fairing" thing. So I got a 18" Clearview, can see over it, but can easily be completely behind it when necessary. Works for me! ;)

Sounds like you have things well under control with the 2 bikes now. Motor squared away on the SEFB? Nice hearing from ya man! :2vrolijk_21:
