Rider backrest on 09 FLHTCUSE4
« on: November 30, 2008, 05:22:34 AM »

This question is directed at only the 09 SE Ultras, since the seat and backrest have that gray stripe going up through the middle.  I am very comfortable on the seat itself and do not wish to replace it.  However, the rider backrest sits too far forward at the upper part of it.  I have adjusted it with the screw on the backside of the back rest, but that does not help.  The only part of the backrest that I am making contact with is the upper edge of it.  It's like the 2 iron rods don't have enough bend to them.  Has anyone come up with a solution to make this backrest work well?  I think if the rods could be bent back a bit, I would have comfort.  The angle of that backrest is just not good.  Again, I'm not willing to part with the stock look, so switching to aftermarket is not a solution.

BTW, be careful with that adjustment screw.  If you take it out too far, it will come out and it is a real pain to get it back in.

The backrest can be taken out completely. One might be able to bend it just in the ways to fit perfectly, don't you think?

I believe that there is a kit (aftermarket) to move back the TP some inches.... :nixweiss:

One might be able to, but not me.  I wouldn't have a clue how to go about that without ruining it totally.  It at least serves me some function at this point.

What's a TP?  Anyone know about this kit?

Wow, I never scrolled down that far on the main page.  I never knew these categories existed.  Cool!

TP = tour pak

You're backrest mounts in a bracket under the seat. On all of the touring H.D.s that I've seen you can adjust how the bracket attaches to the fender. Two nuts to remove and you have at least four mounting positions on the fender. Takes some experimentation. Good luck.

Sometimes I forget that many haven't been messing with these Harleys as long as I have.
Jim's answer above is correct.
Here is a picture of the bracket that mounts to the fender.

And here is a rider backrest. (05 SEEG backrest, but will work on the 09 SEUC)

Now, because it needs to fit tight you need to squeeze the bars together so they will fit in the top slot on the bracket

I'm aware of how it mounts.  I put mine on the last bike I had.  I thought that those adjustment holes where it mounts to the fender only change the position in relation to the slot in the seat, not the angle that the backrest sits.  The part of that mount where the backrest fits down in doesn't change in angle, nor do the mount rods attached to the actual backrest.  I will experiment with trying to move where it bolts to the fender, but it just doesn't seem to me initially that it would help any.  I hope you prove me wrong.

Once it's squeezed together then it can fit in the bracket like this.

Note that there are 3 sets of height adjustments for up and down travel.

Also note there are 4 sets of adjustment holes for forward and backward placement of the backrest bracket.

So with the up and down, forward and backward and angle adjustment options available you should be able to adjust the rider backrest to suit your needs.

I've gotten very good at removing and reinstalling the backrest.  On my last bike, my former gal pal would not get on the bike until I removed it, so it was on and off and on and off all the time.  Without her as a backrest, I won't ride without one anymore.  I have gotten spoiled by the lower back support.

As I said in another thread, you over analyze to much.
The adjustments are there, you just need to experiment till it feels good.
If for some reason you can't find a position to make you happy, just take your girfriend everywhere you go.
But my opinion is you probably have a lot more adjustment options with the backrest bracket than with your girlfriend!
Good luck!

If you look at the photo you just posted, your old one leans back somewhat vs the one on the bike is very straight up and down.  I'm still going to try the adjustments.

Good idea for where you put the passenger hookup for heated gear...I assume that's what is sticking up through the seat slot by your backrest.  I still need to find a passenger worthy of spending money for extra heated gear.

That is because it's sitting that way for display puposes.
The angle would change if it was actually mounted to the fender.

You are correct, that is Nancy's hookup for her lectric clothes!
But she forgot to put the plug in it.
