Seems like a good question to me...
« on: December 01, 2008, 10:34:55 PM »

With the SERK's having the front lower oil cooler, how do you get the old oil out of the cooler when you change the oil?

Do you use an air hose and blow back through the oil filter adapter and force it back to the pan?

Just thought I'd ask what is probably a very simple question.

Thanks in advance.

The short answer is you don't....the cooler only holds a few ounces of oil. I would not used compressed air into the cooler or lines either.
There is a company that makes kit that allows you to get all the oil out but it is pricey http://www.roguechopper.com/

You could always get rid of the stock oil cooler and install a JAGG.  Let gravity do the work.   :2vrolijk_21:

Thanks to both of you for your answers.

If I were to have used air, I have a small round rubber tip air nozzle that will fit in small holes to blow things out.  I would also set the regulator to about 10 psi, never higher, to evacuate the lines and the cooler.

I just didn't know how much the cooler held.  I would imagine with the lines and the cooler you're looking at about 1/2 pint of undrainable oil without purging it with something.

I saw in one of the mags lately that someone has a kit that after you fill the oil you start up the bike and it will drain the oil from the filter area and you watch to see when the dark oil is replaced with the light colored oil.  Then you shut down, install the filter and then refill the pan to the appropriate level.

Is this what www.roguechopper.com sells?  I watched their video and it looks like it might be the same one.

Thanks again.

I don't think the scavenger has a kit for touring models above 2006. After watching the video on the Scavenger web site, I find it interesting on the amount of dirty oil pumped out of the motor after draining. That's a lot of dirty oil left in the motor.

All I do is remove the oil line that returns to the oil tank, add the clean oil, then start the bike and run it when I see clean oil I shut the bike off and top up the oil tank. Also put on a new filter first. It uses extra oil , but this is what I do. before I go on long trips.

Yes the Scavenger is available for the 110", I was talking to Art Crane from R&R cycles about them yesterday. They carry them and have them in stock, at least they had one yesterday. I know a guy who has one and like me feels that the $150.00 is well worth doing the job right. Give Art or Pete @ R&R a call, they are also strong believers in Dyno oil and do not use or recommend the synthetics oil for their motors. ,Their 155" uses dyno oil and that beast is down right scary. Funny thing I started a post a short time ago on the Scavenger from Roguechoppers and asked the forum for any advice and had zero replies, quite a few read it but not one reply! I must have some type of catchy disease because most of my post go unanswered, a guy could get a complex but then I have to consider the source. Just Kidding. I was planning on starting a new post on lifetime oil filters like the ones offered from Pure Power and K&P Engineering but don't want the post to just die so maybe one of you guys can get it going. A lifetime oil filter that we can see what is trapped in there every time we change the oil along with the scavenger sounds like a winning combination.

Do a search Ray.  Those oil filters have been discussed pretty thoroughly previously.

Lot of those thoughts about dino oil going on these days. Vern feels the same, and my new motor will be on a 100% dino oil diet!!! ;)

I don't worry about the oil that is in the cooler/lines.  You never get every drop of the old oil out of any thing you drain.  Not being smart, everyone is different.

I kind of owe you guys an apology, Sportygordy was right on the availability for the Scavengers on the 2007 and 08's touring bikes from R&R. Last week I took a drive to pick one up at R&R and I had the whole crew, Art, Pete and Reggie looking for the right part. They ended up calling Phil from Rogue Choppers who makes and owns the Scavenger unit. Phil told the crew from R&R that he has just finished making one that fits the new bikes but had not sent one to them yet. But all is not lost, Phil is working on filling orders for the 07 and 08 touring bikes that will work.  He has not sent any out yet because he has not finished the instruction video yet, but it should be done in a few weeks.

For those that have the Baker + 1 pan like I do, he indicated that it would probably not fit. Just my luck!

I'm taking photos of the Baker pan and will e-mail them to Phil so he can see what he can do. If that doesn't work we will meet up and I will loan him my pan so he can come up with a set up for us.

I must just be wired differently than the majority.  I hear guys tell me that $150.00 is allot of money to spend just to get rid of some dirty oil that is left behind but then they spend thousands on getting their baby chromed up just right. Just because it can't be seen doesn't mean it isn't worth it. Guys like Hoist, Sandabar, Black Diamond 110 and others that have allot of time and money on their well designed and strong running units have to be thinking of using this type of unit to fully protect their investments. Maybe I'm just a notch or two above anal, I just don't know anymore.

For those that are interested, I will put a new post when I get more information. For those wanting a unit to fit their 07's and 08's right now, call Phil from Rogue Choppers at 1-866-877-6483.  He can set you up right away but as I mentioned, the video is not done but he said he could talk you through it.

Thanks for the updates on the Scanvenger. I am interested and trying to keep up when 07, 08 Touring versions comes out. I'll be plunkin down $150 bucks for sure. After watching the video and realizing how much oil is left in the system after an oil change, heck yea.. i don't want the much dirty oil in my engine.

Lots of ways to answer this but the quick and easy is that if it bothers you that much, buy some really cheap dino oil and run four quarts through your bike till it's up to temp and then drain it all out and put in the AMSOIL or whatever good stuff you use. For about $8 you can give your entire oil system a flush.

Agree with you BB...I personally don't think there's enough "dirty" oil left in the bike after draining to worry about, but if you are that concerned, at $8 worth of cheap oil ran through, you can do roughly 20 oil changes or 60,000-100,000 miles of riding for the $150.00.  A lot of people don't keep their bikes that long anyway.  You don't get all the "dirty" oil out of your car/truck either and I'd venture to guess there aren't many people that have something similar to this on them.  Kind of a gimmick as far as I'm concerned.   :nixweiss:

Agreed! And 2-3 qts will do. And run it thru the old oil filter, not the new one. You're only running it a few minutes. Then dump it and change the filter. Even more oil changes/flush that way Charlie! ;) ;D
