Anyone else had this? Frame not fully painted
« on: December 02, 2008, 02:55:35 AM »

I noticed this while cleaning the bike on the lift. There is no paint on the under side of the frame, both sides near the shock absorber mounts.

Its rusting nicely. Perhaps the painter had a bad back.

Though not the actual "frame" per se, it is nonetheless shoddy electroplating at best.  Yeah........Same here on my 06.....and my 02

Very similar to what you would see on the inside of a chrome bumper, back when vehicles had chrome bumpers.  Saves $$ when you don't plate the normally non-visible portion of a part, so of course that is what you get from the MoCo.  You will find the same sort of thing on the various tubular chrome or painted pieces such as bag supports, crash bars, Tour Pak mounts, etc.  I always love it when rusty water drips out on the freshly washed surfaces.  You will also eventually find rust stains leaking out of the frame tubes themselves.  This is all surface corrosion that won't affect part function or durability over the normal life of the part, it is just cosmetically ugly.

I suppose if it really bugs you, you could remove the parts and do a little paint job on those interior surfaces.  I've been known to do that on previous bikes, but haven't developed enough gumption to do it on the SEEG.  Funny how as I get older the stuff that used to drive me crazy isn't so important anymore. :confused5:

Hi Jerry,

That picture is not that clear, but it is the frame tube and the two plates that are welded to it, that are rusting. It's the inside/underneath of the frame area shown in the attached pitcure.

If left as is the brackets could snap off as the corrosion gets worse

The bike is still under warranty and I have informed to dealer. I think the area would need to be shot blasted prior to painting, unless there is another way.

Cheers,

Oops - looked like the underside of a chrome fender strut cover in the first pic, just assumed that's what it was when I made my post.

Not sure how they would go about trying to fix that, assuming they agree to try.  I think you will find that what you are seeing is fairly common, and the MoCo may very well give you the old "that's normal" answer.  Good luck.

Same thing I thought I saw.  My apologies for getting that wrong.........but even still, fixing it right would mean stripping and powdercoating.  I think I'd just keep it clean, ride it, and watch it.

I took some more pictures today, it's not easy getting a good view. The right hand side looks worse than the left

My dealer says they are happy to replace the frame, thats makes me feel a whole lot better. They are going to do it when they replace the cylinder heads.

Curious how nasty you had to get with your dealer. Or was it a slam dunk, your dealer came to the rescue and went to plate for you in regards to dealing with the MoCo?
