2-way radio
« on: December 04, 2008, 06:12:47 PM »

i will be moving in the next week or so and my wife has "allowed" me to ride from texas to florida on one condition: we have a viable communication device. I'm looking for any ideas on a good pair of 2-way radios and a headset i can wear while riding so I can hear and speak without too much interference/noise.

Maybe a good compromise would be a cell-phone with blue-tooth ?

already tried that with the cardo bluetooth headset specifically for that, but the wife said it was too expensive (around$200) and driving through most of texas there is poor cell phone coverage.

Oh Well --- good try :)
I guess that if that is too many $ that you couldn't convince her to let you trade for a new SEUC (they throw the built-in CB in FREE) ;)

Buy a Chatterbox and get her a handheld unit. You can get 2 channel units pretty cheap.

those seem to come out to more than the cardo headset would. What I am really looking for is a good headset with a mike that i can wear with my helmet and plug into a 2-way radio. I believe that would be the cheapest way to go.

You could plug an ear bud into most two way radios, then put your helmet over it.  Terrie still listens to her iPod that way (via little speakers in her ears).  However, in order for you to talk, you'd have to reach down and press the PTT (push to talk) switch every time. :nixweiss:  I think you'd end up throwing that 2 way radio as far as you could, long before you get to Florida. ;D

marshall,
There's not a decent system out there that will be less than $200.  Hand signals will work the best and be the cheapest.  I've tried all the cheap ones, none work worth a crap.  The expensive ones work, but you'll spend a butt load for one.  For 1 trip, work out hand signals prior to leaving and stick to them.  With any of the cheap systems, you'll be using them anyway.

Start a new thread and ask the same question.  We will all respond that it is too dangerous using a communication device and that for a trip like that, the best thing is hand signals.  Then you can show her the thread and let her know that for safety's sake, she should listen to the forum.

not newly wed, just smart enough to know that one should not stir up the peasants or one's head might be delivered to the guillotine.
plus the communication is a small price to pay for me having my bike when we move instead of waiting a month or two for the military movers to deliver it(and they would probably damage it in the process too).
