Is there a SE Ultra that has......
« on: December 05, 2008, 01:46:14 AM »

ABS Brakes and throttle by cable?
In my next purchase, I like the ABS, but am trying to avoid TBW.
If I had to choose between the two, I'd take throttle cables over ABS.
I know it sounds atavistic, but that's how I am.

If you want to buy a new bike, You'd be out of luck. All new bikes have TBW. You could probably find an '07.

Even if you're looking for a used bike with cable and ABS, I think you're going to be limited to a used Police bike which I believe have had ABS for several years.

All HD touring models came with TBW starting in '08.

Not sure about a V-Rod, but hey, that's not a UC model.  I think Police bikes are Road Kings, not totally sure on that though.

I for one was leery of the TBW, but have put over 6500 miles on mine without any noticeable difference between that and cable.  When I researched TBW I found out that my '04 truck and my wife's '04 SUV both have TBW and we've not even known it.

I know some here have had issues, but I do believe the frequency of problems are VERY low in comparison to those without problems.

It does lead you to wonder though, what will happen when these bikes are older, say 8 to 10 years old and the electronics has glitches etc?

Good luck on your bike search.

I will be a used CVO Ultra, and I hope to pick it up within the next year. I was hoping there was a "split year" where they made some bikes with ABS and cable. I've test ridden the FBW bikes and to me, it just "feels different". I like the immediate response of cable, and the few FBWs I rode seemed to "lag" just for a split second, especially at slow speeds with the bars locked and the bike leaned over. I'm sure it can be tuned or adjusted out, but I'll stick with cable.

True Mike!
Mine had lag on cruise but was programmed out by the tuner.

You can fine tune the throttle response and sensitivity with TTS Mastertune. You can also fix the WOT plate not opening near 100%. Very easy steps but make sure you read the manual before you mess with the adjustments. I'm really happy with my throttle sensitivity now. TTS put together some nice canned throttle responce adjustments in the MT7 canned files. They all seem to be the same so using any of the MT7 files should work fine.  I suggest you copy those adjustments and use as a base, then fine tune throttle response from there. You might very well be happy with the canned changes TTS did.

I never thought about this, but how do we know we're at WOT?  Obviously you take off the AC and with the ignition on and the motor off you crank open the throttle to see where it's at...  But what I mean is that without doing this we are only guessing it's where it needs to be at WOT.

Have you heard of problems where this is not the case?  Is this something the dealer would normally do during at the  1k mile service or pre-delivery check over?

I'm going to take a look at mine this weekend.  It's probably only at about 75% at WOT and that's why I only dyno'd at 112 hp and 135 tq.

Who knows, maybe I'll get more out of the SERK.

Thanks for bringing that WOT adjustment up.

I do not think any H-D dealer would do any of this "normally". On second thought they might not do anything normally at all. And WOT should be always there, since the mechanism of the throttle is designed to provide enough travel, so you're covered till the end. Sorry, no 75% for you ;-))).

Ironhorse,
To answer your question, I don't believe there is a split year.  None of the 07 CUSE's had ABS, but all had cables and none of the 08's have cables, but all have ABS.  I have an 07 and I don't miss the ABS.  But I don't like it on my cars either.  In 225k of driving in my p/u, there's been only 1 instance where it helped, every other time it hurt.  I wish I could turn it off or take it off completely.

As has been noted, many of our cars are TBW and have been for several years.  What about yours?  Do you notice any difference?  Not trying to change your wants, just asking questions.
