LED 3rd Brake/Run Light
« on: August 29, 2005, 07:30:22 PM »

100 LED from Radiantz hooked up for run/brake function. VERY bright, small in size. Wired thru the tourpak interior light harness (light wires are 22-24 gauge, very small). With the LED turns that are also run/turn/brake, and the 40 LED unit on the reflector bracket. Over 230 LEDs makes for BRIGHT light.

My peices arrived today from Radiantz. (thanks for the help DW)... I went with the 100 LED strip and also ordered two of the 5.7" amber strips. Going to mount mine just under the lip of the tour pack lid since the bike is yellow. Going to mount the two amber just under the saddlebag lids.

Looking for an alternate source to the dealer for connectors - local dealer wants $12 for the 12A connector parts and since I need three of them, may not turt to look...

You are not going to need the Heavy Duty Harley connectors with the small gauge wires for the LED's., I assume you bought a couple of the diodes that allow run/brake function. You can buy waterproof connectors at about any good auto store (like the ones GM uses on Fuel injection systems) for a few bucks. You will need one of the HD 8 Pin connectors (male and female halves and they sell the pins for them per each) but the other 2 can be the cheaper GM type.

That lightbar looks great DW.  Set off against the red bike it's really sharp.  Congrats on a slick looking little add-on there.  It's been a long time ago but I remember you talking up some of the Kuryakyn stuff awhile back.  Did you decide you liked this company's stuff better or was there just not an accessory light set that matched up as well as this one?

Twolane, This was just the brightest of any I could find. It does go good with the red, but it comes with 2 tubes, both 18" long, a red and a clear. You can cut the 100 leds and make 10 small units, or just about any combination you want. I cut the 18" red tube to 12" and used all 100 as a brake/run, but if you bought two more 3" units you could use the full 18" section, with a 3" turn signal in each end and the 12" brake/run in the middle. I actually bought this at Myrtle Beach and forgot to buy the extra 3" ones for the turn signals and when I got home I was to impatient to wait and order them. It does seem to be a good product.

Thanks for the description of what's what with the options and install DW.  It really does look good on the red.  If I didn't already have the spoiler up on top I'd be doing that in a heartbeat.  I bet what you've got there is a heck of a lot brighter than the spoiler light too.

DW,

I've been thinking about doing something similar, except I planned to use a single tube with a 2.5 inch amber on each end and 12 inch red in the center, with the wires all routed to the end at the antenna and through the antenna hole to the interior.  Is there enough room in the tube to run all of the wires to that one end?  I sent a query to radiantz, but no reply.

Plenty of room to run all the wires thru the tube. They give you several red and clear end caps, you just pull the wires thru to the end you want the exit on and seal it with a small dab of silicone.  Wires are 22-24 gauge (very small), i cannot remember the exact size. I use the Biketronics eq and Tailbones to control all the rear lights (run/turn/brake). To answer the above comment regarding the spoiler lamp compared to the Radiantz, the Radiantz is much brighter. Also the Drop-In turn signal inserts, which have 46 (i think) LEDs each are so bright they wash out the center taillamp in the daylight. I get good comments from everyone so far.

Finally got th 12" LED mounted. ABout halfway thru the electrical hookups, remembered it had been far too long since I've built pigtails and harnesses. I had a HD turn / brake control module, si I spliced into that harness, then put 3 disconnect plugs in the harness I made that ran to the trunk. Crinmpers I had weren't the right size for the pins in the 12A connector, so will have to do some "follow-up" work later. When I get a little refresher prctice in, I'll mount the turn signal LED strips - just under the lip on the saddle bag lids...

Here's what the LED looks like on a yellow scooter.

Jim SEEG,

Could you send some pics when you finish the install? I'd like to see how it looks on the bags, I was thinking of the little spoilers, maybe this would be better. With the bar on the tour pack too! [smiley=cool2.gif]

CVO,

Here is a little manipulation with photo shop I did before on deciding to put the LEDs on the saddle bags. You get the idea, will finish up the install this weekend.
