Ape hanger on 2009 Ultra?
« on: December 06, 2008, 12:56:31 PM »

Hi gang,

I am trying to figure out if I could put chubby ape hangers on my soon to be new 2009 black ultra.  Has anyone out there done this?  I would like to do Black?  Any photos and info on height would be great.  I love to see a couple of shots so I can see how they would relate to the fairing and how far they have to come back to the rider.

Please, even if you have seen an Ultra with them I would love to hear about it.

Later,

Dave

Wild1 has their 577 and 576 bagger ape bars.  12.5" and 14" respectively.  Most ape hangars won't clear the inner fairing.  So be careful when considering options.

Damn.  Guessed wrong.  Knew Dood would move this one quickly but thought it would go general rather then SEUC since it really applied to SEEGs too.  Glad there wasn't five bucks on this one :huepfenlol2: .

The Wild-1 8.5" Chubby's would work perfect. They have a really wide base (where the bars clamp to the risers) and are configured just right. the 8.5" bars would put your hands about 3.5" higher than the standard bars and if you run them so the rise is in a parallel line with the line of the front forks, they should have enough pull back to suit you AND, clear your fairing.

If your new bike has ABS need to investigate availability of extended length brake lines.  H-D did not have these available a while back.  Don't know if this has changed.

Not based on personal experience, but I have been told that there is a place here in OKC that will custom make the hydraulic lines

Wasn't there a thread a while back about the abs requiring hook up to digital technician to set it up properly and due to potential liability issues dealers were unwilling to do that with aftermarket parts being used?

I don't remember the potential liability issues (doesn't mean anything if I don't remember though :nixweiss: ), but I have heard and read that anytime you crack open the ABS brakes you have to bleed them with the digital technician... don't know for sure, but that's what I have heard.

You may also want to try www.FlandersCompany.com  I had their 13.5" Original Ape Hangers on my Road King and the base and width of the bars had to be wide so I could fit the RoadTech radio in between them.  Theirs was one of the widest setups I found out there.  They also gave me a real nice pullback.  I am having my doubts about how they will look on an Ultra though.  If you do it, I hope you post a photo.  I'd like to have a look at that.

Okay...I think I like the look, although I don't think I could handle the bike, nonetheless stand it up with those bars.  It would certainly give you plenty of room to mount accessories on the bars.

I had the Chubbies 0575 on my 2000 Dresser and liked them.  I'm 6 foot tall and my wife says "all arms and legs".  I thought they would have been better for me if they were an inch or two taller.  We tried the Chubbies on my 08 Copper Top but when we tried to rotate them high enough for me we hit against the fairing.  My dealer recommended the Cyclesmith Apes.  I love'em!

We rode from Tampa to West Palm yesterday, a little over 500 miles and they felt great.  The hit just above the fairing but I don't get any wind on my hands.    I'll take some more pics in the next few days and show off some of my other changes.

Did you need new cables or fly by wire or anything to put those bars on?  They look great and probably just what I need.
