When the ACR is not working the compression in the motor exceeds the starter clutch's ability to engage the pinion gear.  So it grinds.  It will eventually blow out the starter or at least strip the teeth.  The "Product Improvement Campaign" includes new ACRs which should fix the problem.

About half way down the page on this thread are a couple of PDF files which include the notice sent to the dealer.  Simply tell them the campaign numbers and they can verify it with HD corporate.  Sorry I don't know anyone who has it in Spanish.

J-Carr,

Thank you brother. By the way, my bike is the twin of yours. I added Rinehart true duals and power commander. Could not think of anything more I wanted to do to it. Great bike other than this current issue.

Thanks again,

You're quite welcome Tex.  I had the same problem so I know it's frustrating.  As to the bike, I love mine as well.  26,000 miles so far.  All I've done is change to the SE Air cleaner and Fulsac Slip-Ons as far as perfomance mods.  Elctronic change - I added the blue tooth module and the alarm pager when I bought it.  Cosmetic changes I went with the lighted spoiler and chrome windshield trim.  For comfort I added a spacer kit to move the floorboards out an inch from the bike for a little more wiggle room.

Ride Safe,

Ahhh, yes, I did also add the bluetooth. My wife loves that part, no more, "Sorry baby, I was on the road and couldn't answer the phone". LOL

Does anyone know if there is a way to find outif my bike's VIN is included in the Product Program #'s 0905 and 0906? I am not exactly sure when mine rolled off of the assembly line, but do know that it was delivered to the dealer in Las Vegas in July 2008.

Thanks,

Go to the Harley website and select "Owners" then "Service" or "Service Checkup" (forget which it is).  You can key in your VIN and get a report.  Or....  call the service writer at your local dealership and give him the VIN to look it up for you.

Nothing in the report about the service bulletins. Guess I have to make that trip to the dealer. But just in case someone here knows a different way of finding out, the VIN is 1HD1PR8168Y960226 with about 6100 miles on it.

PTEX,
Same thing happened to my 07.
Take it to the dealer and let them replace the broken parts.
Mine turned out to be the entire Clutch Pak that has the ring
gear built into it as a one piece deal. And the starter gear.
I recommend doing it before riding again just to be safe so no
broken parts get stuck in the chain and lock the engine up
when you are riding.
My dealer had the bike for 2 weeks because parts were on backorder.
Hope that helps,
Tim

I have an 08 SEUC that I had the Heads replaced for the recall and now I have start problems like you all describe. My Harley Dealer cant dupe the problem and so I live with it. Very SAD Situation!!!! ACR's Check good!! No wiring problems on ACR's.

DESERT,
Did they take the primary cover off to look at the ring gear.
That will tell the story!

Timbone, I have to go back in for heated grips and I want them to look deeper into the start problem. They tell me they can't dup the start issue. I have it everyday so I am really baffled. I will see if I can get them to pull the primary cover. I did have the Ring Gear replaced at another dealer when they replaced the heads. That dealer had experienced the start problem.

Desertbear,

Why not go back to the dealer that knows about the issues and use them vs. beating your head against a wall with a dealer that isn't in the know or hasn't seen this issue?   I had the starter replaced as well and the ring gear was chewed up on the back side and it took a mirror to get a good look at it.   They then replaced it.

Unbalanced,

Perfect idea. But, for me not a real particle one since I bought the bike in Las Vegas for the ride across the USA (my dream ride that I have wanted to do since my college days, which about the time God made rocks) and then shipped it from Miami back to Republic of Panama where I live. Then top it off with the fact that the dealer here is very limited and hates dealing with parts issues. And has told me that he has never done a warranty job in his entire existence as a dealer. On the rare occasion, I think he told 3 times, when someone has insisted on warranty work, he just did it out of his own pocket rather than deal with the manufacturer because they just give him credit for future purchases and not cash after making him jump through so many hoops that he feels like a circus animal.

And that's all I have to say about that. LOL
