Flash, if you have your heart set on the Green & Black, don't listen to the voices in your head, and go buy it. The 110" is a fine engine with a few "quirks". Get the extended warranty and do what you're supposed to do with a motorcycle: RIDE IT! Whatever problem may or may not appear is not so insurmountable.
BTW, welcome.

I have an '07 and am in the "if I'd have known" court as well.  There is no way I would have gotten this thing that has now been in the shop a month and two days for gaskets, ACRs, pistons banging into the cylinders, valve noise, and a vibration that started in the last year - you know, the "quirks" that are supposed to be part of what makes a $30K vehicle special.   The things they supposedly changed on the late '08 and '09 models are what the recall was intended to address, so I don't see how anybody can say they have been "fixed".  The "fixes" have been failing repeatedly.  The HD air-cooled engine is on it's last walk.  They stretched it too far trying to cut corners and they don't want to put the money into making it sound.  Why would they, they only have to sell them a couple more years and if they can band-aid them through the warranty - and send people a shiny hard-bound book to distract them - they can forget them.

It's your money.  But unlike those of us who have the first year engines, you can't say you weren't warned.

And you have any evidence of '09's engine failures?

disclaimer: this is my opinion, a lot of folks disagree and that's ok!

what I did with my '08:  at 100 miles I had the selling dealer install a drop on kit designed by me...it was mostly for performance, but to anyone who buys the tree-hugger engineered cvo 110" I recommend at the very least:  se204 cam, good slip-on mufflers, an oil cooler, and an advanced dyno tune with power commander...it's important that the tuner set fuel correctly IN BOTH CYLINDERS INDIVIDUALLY and build a custom ignition map...do these things before you ride it and you'll have a dependable bike...I have 10k miles on mine and no issues

The '07 failures didn't show up until later, so it is too early for the '09s.

Not really! My 08 had the cylinder liner move with less than 3800 mile on her!

I've got an '07 FXSTSSE, and have had the 110 upgrade done. I had NO oil leaks before, and none since. I don't know if I'm just lucky or not.(It probably just started leaking since I jinxed myself) I have really liked the engine, and I have heard that the 07 quirks have been straightened out with the 08's and especially the 09's. Hope this helps.

I'm not sure about the liner movement issue...yes we will have problems if the top end is allowed to get to 400* F...and it will if the tree-hugger engineering isn't removed...I've heard folks saying the liner had moved because they scraped their fingernail across the top of the cylinder, and the liner wasn't perfectly flush with the aluminum...my question is:  aren't the liners supposed to be proud of the aluminum because the heat expansion of the two materials is very different?

Hey Skyhook
All I can tell you about the liner movement issue is the MoCo told my dealer the problem exist. The replacement cylinder, which I still have, is flush. I doubt the MoCo area rep would tell me they know about the problem if they were not sure. FWIW.

My leak occurred at 4500 miles...  I replaced the cylinders with Axtell and the gaskets with Cometic myself - among other things - on my dime.  It's been fine ever since...   :2vrolijk_21:

got the idea from the guy who is making some 4&1/8 cylinders for me...he says he leaves the liner couple thou proud, because of you don't, when it heats up the aluminum expands more than the iron liner and lifts the head off the gasket

Ive owned many Harleys.  Had the usual pompous Stealer issues.  I recently fell in love with the green and black CVO Springer.  I keep hearing about these serious 110 motor issues.  Have these issues been resolved in the 09s?  Should I steer clear until the Factory gets their act together or is all good now?

Thanks,
