Fuel Gauge
« on: December 09, 2008, 02:32:21 PM »

2005 SEEG.  The fuel gauge has never been very accurate (go figure!) but I now notice that when the bike is off the fuel gauge reads just below 1/4.  Since I have owned the bike the gauge goes to the pin when full and the low fuel light comes on at 1/4 tank but I hadn't noticed the placement of the gauge when off.

Does anyone know how to deal with this?  I know the inaccurate level need to be adjusted through the sending unit but I would think the gauge should read "empty" when the bike (power) is off.

Also, does anyone know how to replace the low fuel light in the speedo?  It is very hard to see (white) during the day - I would think red or blue would be a better choice.

The gauges are notoriously inaccurate.  Most of us go by the trip meter and start looking for gas once we hit 150 miles.  The speedo is a sealed unit as far as I know and nothing can be done to the low fuel light.
The fuel gauge should go to empty with the ignition off.  This is as much as I know.  Hopefully someone will tell you how to diagnos the gauge.  The sending unit is not hard to take out.  If you are close to 25,000 miles, it is time for a new fuel filter anyway (inside tank).

Yeah Mark...that's right! Especially when your about out of gas and have to fill up at a station that is about to run out and you get all their garbage! I will religiously change mine at 25,000 or sooner if I'm about to take a trip. :2vrolijk_21:

I think our gauges are magnetic, so there is no "off" position.

The fuel gauge can be adjusted though. I had the dealer set mine to read 1/4 when I knew I had 1 gallon in the tank. It worked fairly well after that until the bone head mechanic dropped a part on the tank and they replaced the tank.

Is this something that can be done at home or would this be more of a dealer only adjustment?

Thanks,

Don't know. Just knew it could be done. Had them do it during one of the warranty visits.

Lets go back to the filter change, I've never had it changed that I am aware of...  :nervous:

Is this something they usually do at 25K, or am I the mechanic again?  :pumpkin:

Jamie-
Yes, the fuel filter is a maintenance item required at 25,000 miles.  I did mine at 28,000 miles after I read about JR's breakdown.  He had just had his in for the 25,000 mile service and the dealer did not replace it.  Go figure.  Bob

It is in the tank, the fuel canopy gets removed and it mounted to the underside. The new filter comes with a new hose as well. The hoses are notorious for getting holes in them as well.

Does the filter just screw out from the tank?  I would guess the tank should be empty when I attempt to do this?

Stu-
It's not hard but you do need a manual as when you take the fuel sending unit out, it is spring loaded and has to be taken out at an angle.  Once you've done it, you'll know what I am talking about.  Hard to explain.  Then you need a hair dryer to warm up the convoluted hard hoses to slip on the ends of the new filter.  The fuel filter and regulator is held in place by a spring bail.  Filter is around $60 with the hose.   Bob

Thanks Bob. You are the best. I'll buy the filter,42k. Think I'm due? Then of course you'll be hearing from me. (As usual)
