Back in August 1992 I was driving my truck up to the grocery store with my two boys (9&10@ the time) to buy a children's video for them. I got about two blocks from my mom's house when this Gold Wing comes flying around a corner, he could not keep it in his lane. I tried to get off the road but he must have panicked and hit the front brake and laid it down. He was sliding toward me. He was between the bike and my truck when he struck the front driver side. I remember thinking to my self when he got squeezed out the top and went flying thru the air that it reminded me of like squeezing a banana and the inside popping out. It was a bad day for everyone. He was dead, waste down was turned around backwards. The boy's and myself had minor injuries. The truck was totalled. Where he hit crushed about 4 feet of the truck. The motorcycle cop that was there said later that it was the worst he had seen, it was bad for me, and my boy's also. The guy was 46, had the bike 3 months, it was used, he had never ridden before getting the bike. His insurance company said he did not have insurance. My insurance company for nearly two decades (GEICO) cancelled my insurance because of the fatality even though I was not at fault. The investigation report said the fella was doing in excess of 55 MPH. I was doing 30 MPH, the speed limit. It was a road that ran along a river, the corner was nearly like making a right turn for him. I did not ride again till 2005, for about 4-5 years maybe more I would go out of my way to avoid motorcycles. It had an affect on my boy's and it still bothers them when they see me getting my broken body on my bike now. I used to think about this all the time and I guess I had stopped till I watched the video. I do not drink, I do not smoke, I don't do much that is fun to me except ride and tinker with the bikes. I have had so many close calls here in the Tampa Bay area. Having ridden to the Grand Canyon in August, I have found it is a problem across this country with cagers not paying attention to us. Then you have the idiots on bikes that cause all of us grief, and a bad name. I guess all I can say is be very, very observant and be prepared for everything.
