Yall are FUNNY FUNNY FUNNY !!!!!!!!!!!

BTW .......... I do have a break in procedure for the build that Mike mentioned ... you know, used engine, new lifters, new heads, new pistons and rings .... no bottom end work.....
It's not 'MY' procedure, but one that I read somewhere, and now must go find.  A couple of my buddies used this method and subscribe to it.
I'll find it and post it up here.   HOWEVER, you'll have to WAIT FOR IT

I have posted the 'sequential steps' for the TEAR DOWN part of my build in this thread, post number 3

here:  http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=31138.msg501353#msg501353

For those of you that are interested, Please have a look at the list and provide me with any input that you'd care to give.

What have I left out ?
What is 'out of sequence' ?

What could I add that would make it better ?

Thanks in advance for your time and efforts !!!

Mikey

The sequential order of progression for the build  ....

I anticipate that it will require a few iterations .... after yall have a chance to look at it and critique it :D

This is the 'TEAR DOWN' steps .....
This is only a list of steps that I plan to follow ... I"m not trying to re-write the SM.  When I feel that I have all of the 'steps' identified, and listed in the order to be executed,
THEN I'll go back and put in some detail. Again, I do not intend to re-write/re-type the SM, which will be on my work bench.
But I do want to put in some 'TIPS' ... and pointers, like how to remove the rear bolt on the rear cylinder rocker box.

I also intend to built a set of 'steps' for the installation of the new parts.  With 'tips' listed, like checking that the cylinders are 'CLEAN' before you put them back in. You don't want to install
them if they still have compound residue in them from honing .......  right?  RIGHT !  I did not see any steps for 'cleaning' them in the SM     :nixweiss:

Sequential Steps To Execute – (Everything is ‘REMOVE’)
      1.   Seat
      2.   Battery-Disconnect, no need to remove
      3.   Drain fluids
          a.   Gas tank-no need to drain. Use vice grips for the crossover.
          b.   engine, primary and tranny-primary & tranny not necessary unless you're doing that anyway
      4.   Console and tank
      5.   Exhaust system
      6.   Air cleaner and carb-and manifold
      7.   Spark plugs-not necessary for removal
      8.   Rocker boxes – SM pg 3-18
      9.   Rocker arms and push rods – SM pg 3-19
     10.   Heads - SM pg 3-21-mark the headbolts and reuse them on the same studs
     11.   Cylinders – SM pg 3-35
     12.   Pistons – SM pg 3-35
     13.   Lifters and lifter blocks – SM pg 3-49
     14.   Cam – SM pg 3-52
     15.   Inner cam bearing – SM pg 3-56

Immediately stuff some large rags in the spigot holes in the cases, around the rods.

what am I missing ?

Thanks for taking some time to look this over and providing any input !
Mikey

Sequential Steps To Execute – (Everything is ‘REMOVE’)
      1.   Seat
      2.   Battery-Disconnect, no need to remove  good point, Thanks
      3.   Drain fluids
          a.   Gas tank-no need to drain. Use vice grips for the crossover. well, it's easy to drain, and I don't like the idea of the vise grips flopping around, getting it back on like that could be a challenge. I've found I have a bit of a hard time getting the tank back down over the backbone and the wiring. Seems the neck for the crossover always gets caught up on the wiring ....  :nixweiss:
          b.   engine, primary and tranny-primary & tranny not necessary unless you're doing that anyway - Thanks, but it's maintenance time anyways
      4.   Console and tank
      5.   Exhaust system
      6.   Air cleaner and carb-and manifold - yep, Thanks
      7.   Spark plugs-not necessary for removal - that's right, but I want to pull them and 'read' them to see what it's been running like.  Have you seen the write up on how to interpret reading the plugs to tell you how the engine has been running ?
      8.   Rocker boxes – SM pg 3-18
      9.   Rocker arms and push rods – SM pg 3-19
     10.   Heads - SM pg 3-21-mark the headbolts and reuse them on the same studs - Good Point, Thanks !  Tha's some of the 'DETAIL' that I want to put into this doc.  ....  goes along with 'other stuff' as like the rocker arms, and the rocker arm shafts and retaining bolts...... they all have to go back from whence they came  :2vrolijk_21:
     11.   Cylinders – SM pg 3-35
     12.   Pistons – SM pg 3-35
     13.   Lifters and lifter blocks – SM pg 3-49
     14.   Cam – SM pg 3-52
     15.   Inner cam bearing – SM pg 3-56

Immediately stuff some large rags in the spigot holes in the cases, around the rods.  Yup, I'll do that as soon as I pull the cylinders up a bit, and before I pull the cyclinders off, and before the cir clips come out to remove the piston wrist pins and pull the pistions.  Don't want to drop ANYTHING in there !!!!

Thanks Howie for you time and input !

so, early next week I owe ya two things ....

1) close up pics of the handlebars that go in that other thread
2) the break in procedure

here's the break in procedure that I plan to use when I put her back together ..............

Break in and heat cycles. Okay it is time to start the bike. But we do not want to overheat the rings and cause microwelding.

So we need to do some heat cycles.

Once the engine starts run it only for about 1 minute, then shut it down and let it cool completely.

If you have a stand type fan place it so it blows air across the cylinders.

Now run the bike for 2 minutes and cool completely again.

Then repeat for 3 and 4 minutes as well.

Each time cooling completely between runs.

Now take the bike out for about a 20 mile ride - keep changing up the RPM's ... NOT above 3200,  and cool completely again.

Your heat cycles are now complete.

Now for the next 400-500 miles keep your rpms changing up the RPM's and below 3200 .

Once you have reached that feel free to wick it up!!!

BTW - I'm also going to use 'BREAK IN OIL' and change that out at about 100 miles. At which time I'll switch to 20w-50w, and run that for about 400 miles, then change it out again and go back to regular schedule changes.  Yes, I'll be changing the filter out at each of these oil changes too.

Do you know of 'other' break in methods ?  I'd be interested in reading them, Thanks

As you know, I had ordered my gaskets between Christmas and New Year

they came in last Friday or Sat

I was going through the order tonight .....

What she did was instead of sending me all of the individual HD gaskets for the rocker boxes (cause I wanted to, and plan to, use James gaskets on the rocker box bases, and was gonna use HD on the internals.  She did a look up on it and converted JGI-16779-99-x to DS-173316

these are James gaskets, and is their rocker box gasket kit

soooooooooooo

is it worth the hassle to try to get it fixed, or just use the James gaskets, even on the internals of the rocker boxes

sometimes it might not be worth dealing long distance for parts like this

If it were my build.....I would use exactly what I mentioned in the previous thread about gaskets ie: referencing the ones you mentioned eariler in this "THREAD" about which gaskets you were going to use....I tried the James Neopreme/rubber "internal" gaskets before.....and they simply failed....so I had to go back into my rocker boxes a second time....at the time it seemed so overwhelming....today it wouldn't be that over whelming......I realize it's a "mix" and "match" but "indeed" James Gaskets have great quality for the one piece gaskets....but their "neopreme" rubber gaskets just don't have the same "exact" specs as the OEM ones do for this "particular" application.....but of course it's your call, I can only speak about past experiences....

So if it were me I would hold off the build until you get all of the right gaskets....

You mentioned that it's long distance and such....that wouldn't matter to me....I once ordered gaskets from a 20% dealer and they arrived bent because of how the shipping was prepared....I called the dealer involved and they sent me out brand new ones....no questions asked.....if you ordered one thing and something else arrived....I would inform them of the issue....and see how they would like to "address" it.....but regardless when it comes to these "Evos" I would "painstakingly" work with the specific gaskets I have mentioned previously....even if it delays the build....nothing more disappointing than having a "gasket" fail after all of the "hours" spent putting everything back together....

Why grief? I've got it my TC and one of my Evo's. Vern loves em. I've had no issues either! I'm piped to the ground on all my bikes, so who knows how well it really works. But I've had no problems, and hopefully it helps some. It did not prevent carry over on my hopped up TC 110 however, and I piped it to the ground. So my take, it might and hopefully does help some. And I don't see how it'll hurt none. Just don't be surprised if you still get some carryover. ;)

Yeah, there could still be some carry over .... but it should be less, since the reed valve is not timing dependent and should breathe as soon as the piston starts down

I blew into it to see how much pressure it takes to open the reeds...... not very much at all, so as soon as there is pressure in the case, and the piston starts down the pressure will be relieved.

On my new setup I am not venting back into the A'C ........ two little catch cans, one on each breather bolt...... I'm not crazy about those, but it's a long story.....
so if they are a problem, and need cleaning often, I'll route to ground and be done with all that    :pepper:                 :2vrolijk_21:

For what it's worth I had to remove the rear brake pedal as you can see in this photo to get into the cam case....
