HD Garage Door Opener Help
« on: December 16, 2008, 01:07:56 AM »

I'm trying to install a hand me down HD garage door opener transmitter in my Ultra. Wires on transmiter modules are one of each:

Yellow
Orange
White
Black

I'm assuming these splice into the headlight wire socket following same color code, i.e. yellow to yellow, black to black. etc, etc. ?? If so, it ain't working.

Also, can you program two separate transmitters to one receiver? If so i assume you follow program sequence for each transmitter? Push program button, and hold on receiver until red light blinks, turn ignition on and cycle low/high beams release program button??  :nixweiss: then on to the next??  :nixweiss:

I don't know about two separate transmitters to 1 receiver.  If that were the case, another Harley could open your garage door.  You can, however have multiple receivers opening one garage door.

As to the wires, I would definitely ask your local parts department for a schematic.  I've installed the opener in 2 bikes, and it wasn't as simple as you're guessing.

Good luck -- it's a great gadget!

Yes I have 3 different transmitters programed to 1 Harley Door Receiver.

Yellow to Yellow on Headlight Harness
White to White on Headlight Harness
Black to any Ground
Orange to Switched power source ( I use the wiring for the International running light Usually has a red plastic cap over connector)

Follow Brad's instructions to wire it up.  Follow your own instructions for programming with one exception.  Cycle through the high-to-low then low-to-high sequence twice rather than once.

The light on the receiver will let you know when it has accepted the code from the xmitter.  Also remember that the receiver need not be hooked to the garage door opener while you're doing the programming.  You can stand there right next to the bike with the receiver in your hand and do the deed.

That's not a concern as the receiver has to be trained to each transmitter that will operate it.  The same as the receiver that is built in the garage door opener to begin with.

Well guys, It works  :orange: I feel a bit stupid though,  ??? meticulous me   ;D somehow crossed the black wire with the yellow wire  :-X. A quick switch-a-roo and bingo works like a charm. I didn't get a chance trying to program two units yet, thats tomorrow nights project. Sure getting cold out in the garage. Plan on shopping for a good portable type heater unit this weekend. Had my eyes on a Kerosene heater until i saw the price of Kerosene at Home Depot, $10 bucks a gallon. Any ideas on heating the garage?? Not sure if a Heater Buddy will do it.

Congrats on having the worst of it done.  That kero price is hard to believe.  Can remember when I was 11 started working at a little neighborhood Texaco station.  Had a hand cranked kerosene tank around back.  Year before the 73 embargo.  Sold kero for 20 cents a gallon.

I went w/ a unit similar to this. Only minor pita is moving it around attached to a standard propane tank. Works very well though.

I like my own setup.  Cost less than $25.
Got a male/female connector setup from H-D for left hand switch harness (grey conn), opened my hand held opener for G-opener and removed all switches and extra stuff.  just left components for one door unit.
Wired it up between male and female connector to work with left turn signal (I ride with high beams in daylight) wrapped it with rubber and then plastic tape and plugged it in line to the harness connection behind the fork.
I can connect or disconnect it in less than 10 seconds , literaly and it uses rolling codes since it's the OEM unit.
Works great.   :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21:

I too went to a simmilar unit.  It works better than others due to its fan and ability to to control the heat. I bought mine at LOWES for around $100.00. Works great but I found that  I needed to open the garage door from time to time to get some fresh air in. It is a little noisey but it sure warms the place up.

I had A contractor friend hard up for work over tonight to check out adding another forced air vent. He found a way to tap into the forced air vent feeding the bathroom next to the garage. For $200 bucks he is going to add the vent, labor and materials included. After seeing his ideas, i could probably do this on my own but it would never get done. Any luck i can come home from work tomorrow with a nice toasty garage.   :bananarock: :bananarock:
