Oil Carryover, Ultra SE Stage I
« on: December 22, 2008, 02:33:45 PM »

How many of you out there are finding oil in, or dripping out of, your Stage I SE air cleaner?  If I don't clean mine every 500 miles, it drips out.  Had it to the dealer who put it on a dyno and said they saw nothing unusual.

Is this your first Harley?

My current bike (08 SEUC) is not dripping oil from the A/C YET, but everyother Harley that I have ever owned did.  Not all Harleys do this, but I would say that more drip than don't.

There are a few aftermarket solutions to the A/C oil drip... Someone here will chime in and let you know what your options are.

Purple bike drips.
Green bike doesn't........or at least it didn't.
I just wipe it up and keep on riding.  It happens.  Besides, every 500 miles you have a reason to spend some time in the garage, cleaning your air filter, listening to music and drinking beer.  That's great stuff, man!

T-man,

Generally, the longer the bike sits in between rides, the more you'll get "blow back"  from the breather bolts into your a/c.  This is the case in most big inch and higher compression engines.  In my Titan, I have lines running from the breathers to the bottom of the bike and a small container to hold the oil which I empty from time to time, depending on how much I ride the bike.  With the new SERG, the Titan is not getting much use.....  You can buy kits for this if it's really a problem but it is normal.

:ROFLOL:  I used to do that on my 02 Ultra.  Worked great.

my 07 ultra had carryover, oil dripping out the air cleaner constantly - they put in new rings, honed the cyls - did the break in on the dyno - 5 cool down cycles.

no drips, no oil in the air cleaner, nearly no oil consumption, no spots on the floor.

the factory rep told me the carryover was from warming it up too long combined with weak rings. - he told me to just start it and ride gently two blocks each day and the problem would not come back. he said that riding in stop and go is not as hard on it as the first 5 mins since the oil is hot and flowing. said that idling the engine when the oil pressure is still high in the morning is the hardest on it.

i pull a side car - its got 10k plus miles - i start it and ride off gently the two blocks to the second stop sign. then go for it. the problem has not come back - this is the first harley ive ever owned that has no leaks i can find - no drips on the floor. its amazing. the 77flh needed real work of some sort every 10k, this one just needs some lube every 5k or so. the oil coming out of the 07 looks cleaner than what i remember putting IN the 77.

go figure
