Looking for a little advice - 110
« on: December 23, 2008, 09:15:18 PM »

I have not done really anything to the motor yet, but from reading a bunch of threads here and talking to a couple of techs I am starting to compile the items I plan to address with my 110". Just looking for any additional items I should consider. So far the list includes:
  • SE 50 mm throttle body & injectors
  • Jagg 10 row oil cooler (scraping the H-D for better cooling
  • SERT
  • Air Cleaner set up (not sure which way to go on this one yet, any comments?)
  • Exhaust (also not sure if I should go with a set of True Duals or 2 into 1)
I already have Lenale fan mounted and did the lowers with a detachable kit for the warmer weather. I also spoke with another owner and he heat wraped his headers then put the heat shields back on, stating that it did help alot. I am not really looking for more power, just to remove ther heat. Adding more fuel, and letting the air flow better I know will help. Is there anything I should really consider to install in the motor?

Thanks for any/all input. I love the bike and plan on keeping it.

HPI throttle body - much better intake manifold then the SE throttle body
    • Jagg 10 row oil cooler (scraping the H-D for better cooling
    • SERT
    • Air Cleaner set up (not sure which way to go on this one yet, any comments?)

Adding more fuel, and letting the air flow better I know will help. Is there anything I should really consider to install in the motor?  Cams... lots of choices better then stock...(lots of opinions, too!)

the throttle body and injectors are not necessary in you case...sert is a good idea, just shop around for a real tuning center and be sure that they set ignition timing as well as fuel...I also suggest changing the cams to any mild performance cam like se204, andrews 26, h-q 500...the oil cooler isn't really necessary if you correct the tuning/exhaust/cam issues...don't waste your money on true duals...they look good and sound good, but don't perform very well...a good set of slip-on mufflers on stock headpipes is the best value...if your pipes have catalysts, have them removed...2 into 1 exhausts are the best performers, but are expensive and not really necessary unless you're looking to make big power

What am I missing here? The guy didn't state the model or year. How do ya know the 50mm ain't necessary. It must be an '07 if he wants to put a 50mm on. And then a new TB IS necessary. Original year 110 needed a bigger TB. HD knew it and put the 50mm on in '08.

I agree with Scott. Very simple formula to wake these things up and more reliable! ;)

Another vote for the responses from Scott....great advise.

One thing to add for cams: for a bolt in (no head work) a Wood TW7 or SE 251. For others you need to look at the big picture and the build as a whole. Head work is the key here when you go beyond the bolt-ins

SE251 needs more compression to function correctly no?

they may like a bump in CR, but not needed. completely a bolt in (ready to go)
(of course a tune is needed)

I've seen it used in a 110 both ways. Both with 50mm TB's. The higher CR helps, but the straight bolt in isn't bad at all. Happens to match up nice to the 110, even w/stock CR! Just use the Cometic 0.030" Head Gasket for a skosh higher CR! ;)

I do agree with you guys...what scott suggested will work fine

what I'm suggesting is a cheaper alternative...if we add a cam that is bigger than 255, but closes the intake valve 34 to 36 degrees abdc, then a bigger throttle body is unnecessary, because those baby cams do not require more air/fuel than the stock setup can provide

there's only one problem with all those midrange cams (andrews 54, yuill 14, zippers 575, se251) that our members have proven to work...they need high compression to make decent torque below 2700 rpm...and what a lot of folks may not understand is that below 2700 is where we spend a lot of time...now if you have a light bike or are willing to keep the revs up, go ahead and get a long cam

We spend alot of our time below 2700 ??? ? But I do agree with what you are saying. Although if one spends most of their time below 2700, they probably wasting their money on mods like these.

What's wrong with a set of 204's in a build like this?

Thanks for the input. I will certainly look into doing the cams as well. The only reason I was considering a set of true dual was to get the header pipes away from the seating area for heat purposes. I'll keep bouncing around ideas from everyone until I do the work. I'll have to wait to the spring to address due to $$$ tight now after the holidays.
