ECM (RE) CALIBRATION ??
« on: December 27, 2008, 04:40:46 PM »

GREETINGS ALL,    I am new here and want to share some feedback about this peculiar subject.  I am in the midst of purchasing a 2009 CVO FatBob (Fire/Black) and have encountered different explanations in regards to modifying the "sound".  I have never used stock pipes (slip ons) because I don't like the sound

This HD dealer is telling me that I need to install an SERT to complete the modification.  I question this only because I have a 2007 Sportster 1200 with slip In's and never had to install an SERT. That bike still runs awesome today @ 13K.  I had always been told by some insiders other than HD that the ECM will automatically adjust itself and the Sporty is living proof.

Most of you have heard of "Nightrider". When I posed this scenario to them as well as MMI and other Harley dealers, they were all in agreement that a super tuner is NOT necessary. The CVO 110 engine has already been tuned and installing slip on's will not make it run any leaner or cause issues.  The dealer is just trying to sell tuners and dyno tunes.

Buyer beware....

Any feedback will be appreciated

This is a good place to do your "HOMEWORK"! There are lots of people here that have gone down that road before, and you can sift through their experiences with the "recalibration" the dealers are selling. Check out what others with the same bike/setup YOU are planning, and find out what works/doesn't work. It will save you time and frustration down the road. Don't always rely on what the dealer tells you, they are mostly "parts changers". Yeah, I know.......there are SOME good dealers, just hard to find! I would give you MY experience, but, my '09 is a tad different.
Good luck.

Thanks Dude.  For right now I am just going to leave the bike "stock" except for the louder slip on's.  BTW.....any suggestion on what would give it that throaty rumble w/o waking the neighbors??

Per definition the 110's are running lean from the factory. Adding a modification to the exhaust will not change that condition. Changing air filter and adding a ECM tuning device (there are several to choose from, not only the SSERT) will considerably improve both hp and torque. It's your choice.

Again, sound is a very personal choice. I would recommend riding with some friends who have mufflers similar to what you are looking for and making your decision accordinly. Make sure you have similar engines. Good luck.

The 09 CVO Fatbob has the heavy breather intake on it.
so, depending on what size baffle is in the slip-on's that you're planning to use will determine "if" you should use a fuel management device.

some people say that anything over a 1.75" baffle should have a tuner.

My opinion is, because ALL new HD motors are already running lean from the factory, you need some kind of fuel management device regardless.
not only will you get a little more power, but the motor WILL run cooler, and on an air cooled motor, every little bit helps!!... :2vrolijk_21:

now, I'm running 2.25" baffles in my Rinehart Cross-back exhaust, not only is the exhaust sound very deep, but it's also loud.(exactly the way I wanted it!!!)
I'm using the TTS MasterTune tuner and I'm very happy with it so far, as soon as the weather starts to warm up I'm going to do some tuning to it. :2vrolijk_21:

the new bikes have o2 sensors on them.

you can do some changing and the ecm will adjust to match - not much changing, but some.

if you want to just cool it off there are adjusters you can plug into the o2 [xied etc] that will cool the bike off. [and make them use more gas]

sert, super sert, pc111 etc are always a option, especially if max hp is wanted, but for a straight pipe change - probably not needed.

If you're just changing the mufflers, the ECM will adjust to the freer flowing mufflers without the use of the SERT.  However, it will still run the engine at a very lean (EPA certified) 14.7:1 AFR .  You need to bring that down somewhat (to around 13.5-13.7) to allow the engine to run cooler, as others have said.  The only way you can do that, is with some sort of a fuel management system, (the SERT, PCIII, Fuel Pack, Master Tuner, etc.).

The best place I have always found to check out mufflers and anything else you might want to learn about is in the parking lot of a Harley dealer on Saturday morning. This is usually the most popular time and place for riders to congregate. At this time you can listen to motorcycles and observe lots and lots of aftermarket parts. I have found without exception, owners are alway eager to share experiences and ideas.

Please do not take this personal, but this is also the place to hear the most b*llsh*t about those things as well.

To me its like buying a gallon of ice cream and not putting it in the freezer, jobs half done. Dont chance damaging your investment, affordable tuners are a dime a dozen and the benefits go far beyond just cooling the motor or richening you wont be sorry!
