A few observations
« on: December 28, 2008, 12:28:46 PM »

Well after looking at the new bike parked in the garage for the past 3 weeks the weather finally cooperated and the wife and i were able to log a few miles. One thing that we noticed right off the bat is the transmission whine, particularly in 5th gear. Hopefully getting something in there to replace the Syn3 will help that. And the exhaust, when the wife says it sounds like a Honda something has to give.

Other than that the bike felt and rode great, now if spring would only hurry up and get here.

It's new, it's tight, it's gonna make noise, lots of it. Many of them will quiet down with time and mileage. Some you'll simply get used to. The tranny noice should quiet down after a bit and AMSOIL does help as well. In about 5,000 miles I expect you'll only notice the noises when one of em changes pitch or volume.

Mine has gotten better over time. It's just enough to let me know what gear I'm in.  :)

If the whine still bothers you after you've ridden it for awhile, put Redline Heavy Duty Shockproof in there and that will quiet it down nicely.

True, it's like black slippery water that already went down the drain....came up in some "oil" field that the MOCO owns, (such wise investors).......dump the Syn3 out of respect for all of the real MFG's who put time and money into R & D and act accordingly to the results..and...and.. :soapbox:

I was using Lucas 80-140 gear oil in my Fatboy's transmission and it worked very well. I didn't have noisy gears but the first gear clunk and all the other shifts quieted right down. I suggested it to one of the local independants using Amsoil and since then told me he's using Lucas now too. Having it available in most parts stores is another nice thing about Lucas.

Thanks for the suggestions, i was using Mobile 1 in my '03 and was happy with the results. I guess i will have to work harder on getting 1k on her and drain the Syn3 for good.

Good 'ole dinosaur stuff here, changed every 2,500 miles and never see temps over 240 on 100 plus degree day.  :2vrolijk_21: :2vrolijk_21: cheap stuff and better on the motor too... believe or not  8)
