Cost of Motorcycle Parts
« on: January 02, 2009, 08:01:11 PM »

I may be asking for trouble with thread, but here goes.

Can any body explain to me why parts for motorcycles are so much higher than for automobiles? :-\  I know they are smaller and produced in lower quantities.

Listen none of us are cheap or we wouldn't own bikes.  But come on $500 seats, $700 for 2 shocks, $1K rims $3K trannys, $7K frames, $10K engines How does this actually happen?  Is it because we are willing to pay? :nixweiss:  What kind of profit margin is on this stuff anyway?

I hope somebody in parts manufacturing answers this.  I sure can't understand it.  Hell, we complain about gas prices.  Why not parts?

Ever heard that "HD" stands for "Hundred Dollars"? Seriously though I have no idea why, but it is a norm that motorcycle parts cost more. One train of thought is because they know we normally only need two of what normally would be four (tires) on a car. So they therefore charge us double to make up for the lack of not having four. :nixweiss:

Having recently gotten into the parts supply business, I can tell you the cost must lie with either the Mfgr or the big supply houses, cause the dealer mark-up ain't squat on aftermarket stuff. Most stuff we're lucky if MSRP is 30% above our cost. Doesn't sound bad till you try to compete with the high volume folks like Jenny S doing 20% discount. $100 on a $1,000 by the time you pay overhead doesn't leave anything in your pocket.

True dat. You can buy two Chevy V8's for what a hi-performance V2 will cost. Shame!!!

Volume - twice over...

Small block V-8's are less costly to manufacture because of large volume...

2 cylinder harley engines are more costly to manufacture because of small volume...

(and because they know we will pay it...)

Make that a tricked out 502 big block with lots of chrome and high performance components to boot!  And enough $$$ to spare for beer during the installation.

In retrospect, lets be glad they aren't aircraft parts.  Imagine paying approx. $40 each for spark plugs and needing 12 of them for your Lycoming
TIO-540-J2BD.

Or the $700K price tag for a GE T700-701D gas turbine engine.

But that's what the market will bear.
