3" open primary
« on: January 04, 2009, 08:02:24 AM »

Curious if anyone knows the deal with open primaries for bikes built after 2006 ? I have an 09 fxstsse3 with V&H Big radius pipes, SERT, saddlebags but can't find a lead on the primaries, called 2 major aftermarket suppliers and they seemed almost baffled by my question saying "maybe they are waiting to introduce them" I can believe I'm the only person to inquire about these !!!

At $2,800 or so with tax I could see a whole lot of engine work or other areas to spend the money....but, to each his own! :2vrolijk_21:

Something I've always wondered about.  Maybe I'm missing something but what could be the advantage of an open primary?

Open primary on most street bikes is mostly for appearance and style for them custom softail kinda builder bikes, or guys going for that look. It's usually a stronger setup. You'll only see the real need for them on on Drag Bikes. They usually fully support the drive setup with strong, heavy billet parts, bigger clutches and stronger comps (or no comp at all) They're noisy, and the belt might snap. But it's easy to replace in an open atomsphere at the track. On a street/touring bike, for normal type riding, even hard riding, it's not necessary, only night be desireable to some to look cool. They'll never need the capabilities of the open primary system. ;)

somthing else to consider. if you have a belt primary enclosed within a standard inner/outer primary it can get pretty damn hot. if its open plenty of air flow to dissipate heat

Prolly would if I didn't have all the parts from my '85 to use on it Craig. Good point though. Another reason people use em on street bikes is if ya don't want nuthin fancy, an complete open setup is cheaper than a complete closed setup when you consider EVERYTHING you need for the closed, chain-driven primary. ;)

But how would a dry clutch hold up vs a wet clutch..... say in a Ride Like A Pro class?

It's more of a "put the power to the ground" setup than a "parade duty" setup. You're better off with a wet clutch for stuff like that I'd think. Plus, people drop the bikes in a class like that, and I'd want a closed primary if I dropped my bike on the left side! You don't want your leg or pants getting caught in there! ;)

Curious if anyone knows the deal with open primaries for bikes built after 2006 ?
Does it have to be open?

I had a closed stock HD primary belt on both my 80 FXSB's.  I do recall reading about some problems but with close to 20K combined on both bikes, I never incurred any.
I realize there are many differences, mainly horsepower and torque.

The inventor slips my mind, but I recollect his original setup was pretty solid.

Either way I have always liked the look.  The open primaries are very noisy as Hoist said.  Probably twice that of a blower.  They sound chinsy to me.

HD's had dry clutches for years too. They even did a belt/belt way back on the '81 Sturgis. I believe the SB's were belt primary, but chain secondary. But closed primary belt drives use very narrow belts and cannot withstand today's torque requirements. Yeah, they make em. But don't think twice about that system with these big inch, big torque motors! Ya wanna belt primary drive, go with a modern big belt billet system! and deal with the noise! ;)
