Luggage Rack on chopped tour pack
« on: September 09, 2005, 09:01:01 PM »

Was thinking of putting the tour pack rack on the chopped tour pack on the 05. Anyone using the HD unit or anything else? Someplaced to pt the full face bucket on those short 200 yard hops or at the rallys.

Just happened to notice that a 2005 Red SEEG on ebay has a rack on the chopped pak. Here is the link.

I also think the new rack HD came out with would look pretty good.

http://www.harley-davidson.com/gma/gma_product.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524448768348&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302287433&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302287433&bmUID=1126314354704&bmLocale=en_US

In my opinion, the premium rack would look out of place on the chopped pak.

Thanks Laker

The new contoured rack (the second link) has possibilities. One of those things that I woul have to see in person before I bought it. Some things that look good on a red or blue bike are just plain butt-ugly on a yellow bike. Have only seen three or four tour pack racks as it is. The premium rack just screams "look at me - I'm huge!"

If you want to protect the paint on the lid of your tour pak, consider buying a rack that is as wide as the lid.  If not you will be tempted to put a bag on the rack that will be wider than the tour pak and which will cause chaffing of the paint.

I had a chopped tour pack on my Road King for a while, I put the small rack on it, BIG mistake, very few bags are made to fit the smaller racks, and if they hang over the sides of the rack, they scratch your paint.

On my CVO, I put the largest rack HD had, lots of bags fit it very nicely, I have the Dekker and one from SAC, both made to attach nicely to the larger rack, with nothing hanging over to scratch anything

just my two cents.

I have the H-D #53665-87 Premium Tour-Pack Luggage Rack on my  [smiley=pumpkin.gif] and would suggest if you are thinking of luggage rack to use, then like it has been suggested get one that will not allow what ever you put on it to touch your paint. I bought the king tour pack and put the detachable hardware on it, and have only used it (king tour pack) twice. Used it once in 2004 to go to Sturgis, then again in 2005 to go to Laconia. Both times I have used the T-Bag Dekker Supreme on top of it. With this setup I have had no problems with anything touching paint on tour pack.

I would go with functionality versus appearance on something like this, you will be happier down the road.

I went the same route as Fire and I'm very satisfied w/ the set up. Basically I've two set ups; 1 for touring and another for everything else. King tour pak w/ full size rack and pillow look seat and then the stock set up for jaunts around the state. Considered the smaller rack and surely would have scratched up the lid by now. Consider the helmet lock it all you want is a place to lock up you lids.  [smiley=cherry.gif]

Here's a little more on what I'm trying to do...

I have a small T-bag roll bag (comes with the Lone Star) goor for smaiil items. I have two hemet locks on the front engine guard, one on each side, which is good for attaching the helmet when parked. Looking for a way to "store" my full face when at the rides thru the grounds at the local rallys or when at the gas station and literally going 100 yards to the restraunt.

The other option would be to put the rear saddlebag guards on (been wanting to do that wnyway) and relocate the helmet locks to the rear guards.

If someone is willing to look outside the Harley line for a part here is another that would be the one I'd use should I put a rack on the King Tour Pak for the red bike.  I just like the looks of it better than others I've seen (none are great, it's just my favorite of the choices).  The round area in the "bar" behind the passenger backrest is there to accept one of the several different round caliper inserts so you can customize the unit a bit or carry back any theme you might already have going on.

Have seen that piece from E-Glide goodies in person.  One big difference between the TourEase piece and the one from E-Glide goodies is that the Tour Ease part isn't so gawd-awful-butt-ugly-gag-me-with-a-spoon-cause-it's-so-heinous to look at.

(unless of course someone happens to have one, then it doesn't suck nearly as bad)
