I am sure this has been covered in other sections somewhere and maybe you can help me get to it.  I have an 07 SE Ultra on the way and am trying to make the best exhaust decision options.  I prefer the dual look but do not know whther to get something with a crossover instead of the true duals.  Right now the bike has a 2 in to 1 and I want to change it.  What are you opinions on the different designs and types relating to horsepower gains or losses?  Thanks again, I am new to the site.

Why do you want to get rid of the 2-1 system?  That will get you the most out of your bike.  I don't know what 2-1 system you have, but if it's the D&D and you just happen to like the look of pipes on both sides, D&D does make a phantom pipe for the left side, so you can have the best of both worlds.

I jsut do not like the look of the 2 in to 1 and that is why I want to go to a dual system.  I do understand some of them make the phantom pipe.  What will be my next best performance-true duals, duals with a crossover, etc?

robonel, I agree with you i do not like the looks or sound of a 2 into 1 but everyone says they perform better, I am running V&H true Dual Big Shots on my 110 they are not the best performing pipes out there but they look good and to my taste sound good, better after i installed Big City's Thunder Monster QC baffels (sound & performance)

I've had 2 bikes with true duals, and now have a fatcat 2-1.  I will never go back to the duals.  The performance is just so much better with the 2-1.

From everything that I have read, true duals offer the least in performance.  My understanding is that the stock system with the crossover is better than the true duals, the new '09 system is better than the old stock system, and then the 2-1 is the best in performance.  Again,this is from lots of reading.  I've never had the 2-1 system.  I've had the other three, but at some point, when I make some engine mods, I'll probably also go with the 2-1 and phantom pipe.

I'm guessing that I had a net gain when I switched my 07 RK from stock to true duals, only because of opening up the air cleaner and a good tune at the same time.  I now realize that had I gone with slip ons and the stock head pipes, I would have probably been a little better off, but eliminating the crossover did get rid of heat problems on the right side of the bike.  I think the new '09 setup is probably one step from a 2-1 system and adding the Fullsac muffler inserts seemed to add a nice kick and definitely an awesome sound.  I can't get all technical with explanations, as I'm no expert, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once.

Thanks for the info and your opinion, you never know what you can do after the Holiday Inn. I am steering towards going back to the crossover header system (can buy on ebay for $25) and some vance and hines slip ons.  I am just not a 2 in to 1 fan and do not really need the absolute best performance out of the bike.  I have not searched for it yet, but any opinions on how to keep down the heat offf the bike? I would guess that you'll get decent performance out of the switch you are making.  That crossover does throw off a lot of heat.  You might want to try to heat shields that mount just under the seat.  They come stock on my 09 SE Ultra and I don't seem to have any issues with the heat right now, but then again I'm in PA and the temperatures are in the 20's.  Plus, they redesigned the routing of the exhaust on the '09, so that may be helping me also.  Anyway, they are available from Harley and I've seen a lot of aftermarket versions out there.  I even saw one company making them in black leather (with or without studs), but I don't have a clue who it was that had those now.

I only rode my last bike, with the stock crossover, for about 200 miles before I had the exhaust changed to true duals, but I very distinctly remember the day I was stupid enough to ride in shorts and got stuck in a traffic jam.  I thought my right leg was going to be well done and ready for eating.

I have a set of stock head pipes with heat shields that came off my '08 serk at 200 miles.  I would sell them for $50 shipped to you if you're interested.
