Sounds pretty pricey! I've gone many, many years w/o a GPS, and used road maps that were years old most of the time. Always got me where I was going. Now I use the Zumo, which is more dificult to see the big picture from. So I still travel with a Road Atlas. I get a new one every 5 years or so, because it's usually pretty ratty by then. I have the original map that came w/the Zumo and wouldn't think of BUYING an update for it but once every few years at most. How often do they change/add roads, and then what's the chance of it affecting you in any significant manner? Not much really! Scratch my head in amazement when I see stuff like this. 280 bucks/yr to update 4x a year! I think NOT!!! STnM's!!! ;)

I think it is a sign of the changing business model for navigation system providers. Since so many people have the devices already, they can't continue to increase revenue with hardware sales. Hence the switch to sell the maps instead. It's similar to many business models we see today (originating from the Gilette razor for free and then you had to buy the blades all your life ;-). We'll see navigation hardware come down to less than $ 50 and the actual cost of running the system will be the map updates. So far the $ 119 option seems more attractive, but it's "hardwired" to the device. We'll see - this is all just emerging. Same for Tomtom, by the way.

As a rule I think the average person probably gets the updates every other year (when they are paying for them). I still carry the H.O.G. road atlas when I travel, because like anything electronic it can chit the bed at the wrong time so it's nice to have something as a backup when it does. I'm going to consider the lifetime just because I don't anticipate purchasing another GPS anytime soon (next couple of years) and for that reason it makes more sense to get the lifetime then possibly purchasing two updates in 3 - 4 years. They have been updating the maps annually previously I believe, but the updates may or may not affect you or the places you may travel to. I think that is one reason for not updating annually, don't see updates in areas I'm not in/travelling would be cost effective to purchase update. :nixweiss:

I'm not clear on this either. Not much info on nuMap Onetime. What is that, and why is it so much more $$$? Thanks Gary! :confused5:

And yes, I'm aware that it updates various POI's, restaurants & hotels, etc. But it's not that important to me. Not enough to keep paying all the time for fresh maps! ;)

The lifetime ($119.00) vs onetime ($69.00) is you only get one update. If you purchase lifetime you get the 4 yearly updates forever (not $69 x 4 = $276/yr). Of course as Louis mentioned the updates are married to the unit/owner they are assigned to, and are not transferable.

Interesting pricing structure. Made to target the $119/Yr I guess Why would anyone want to do $69 each time (up to $276/yr) vs, $119 once. Like you said, even if ya EVER updated twice, it's cheaper to buy a Lifetime. Seems to be setup to suck $119 from EVERYBODY that uses Mapsource! ;)

I'm sure they've done some data collecting and figured that people will not hold on to an unit for "X" amount of years, and since they updates are married to that unit/owner then the cut off point will still allow them to make money. :nixweiss:

1st, d00d let me say,
Thank you for all the help you give us on the Zumo's!
We may complain about the equipement but we will always be appreciative of your help.
You are the Zumo answer man! Where do we send the check?

2nd, You think the lifetime is the best deal?
Lifetime in the electronics world is a short time.
Are you saying that even being a lifetime purchase the updates we get for the next few years thru the lifetime buy is still cheaper than the regular updates?
If that's the case I'm in.
When can you come down here and update mine?

You're welcome, glad to help. No checks needed this is fun for me I do it for free. ;D

To answer your question... If you think you'll keep your present unit for lets say 4 years then the lifetime (IMO) would be a better deal. You will get 4 updates a year for 4 years for $119.00 vs 4 updates a year at $276 x 4 years = $1104 (that's if someone would choose to do all the updates).

Garmin threw in the language, downloads for the  "useful life of the Garmin product" What does that mean?  Probably when they stop supporting the model.  I would ask Garmin because that life time may be substantially shorter then what you envision.

Aren't these updates for Mapsource? And isn't Mapsorce used for all Gamin's, and even other brands? it's not just for the Zumo, right? If so, it should be around a long while I imagine. :confused5:

mapsource is what you load on your computer. the maps are keyed to the serial number on your GPS
