mapsource is what you load on your computer. the maps are keyed to the serial number on your GPS

Oh! I thought that was all done thru the Mapsource. Thanks Neal! Nuther scam to keep sucking $$$ out of ya after you've already purchased what ya need for almost a Grand, I guess! :nixweiss: ;)

Aren't these updates for Mapsource? And isn't Mapsorce used for all Gamin's, and even other brands? it's not just for the Zumo, right? If so, it should be around a long while I imagine. :confused5:

These are called City Navigator updates which will also update the Mapsource software on your computer so they are both synced. I've done one update (free) since owning my GPS. You receive a disk (that was the old way I'm betting the new lifetime will be online) that will install the updates to your computer and then you hook your GPS up by the USB cable and the maps on the GPS are updated also.

I find myself replacing or updating my GPS every three year's or so. I think I'll get my updates with each new unit i buy. Besides, i don't envision new home/commercial growth patters we've seen in the passed to ever return, at least in my lifetime. In other words, updates every five years should do just fine.

Don't forget that the updates aren't just the map grid.  It's also all the databases.  New business listings.  Updated phone numbers and locations for all the fuel stops, restaurants and other points of interest.  It's never completely current of course.  But that's a bigger part of the "update" than is catching new road construction.

With a trillion dollars in infrastructure spending about to occur there is a strong possibility road construction may kick in to high gear necessitating a need for additional gps updates.  :nervous:

But most of that will be in the new bridge to the Bahamas.

Don,

You'd probably be interested to know that Tomtom has a feature called "Mapshare". Users experiencing errors in the map can easily make corrections on their unit. When connected with the provided software through your computer your corrections are forwarded to Tomtom. They verify the corrections and add them to current maps. Whenever you connect, your unit is updated with those verified corrections. The number of corrections goes into the 100 thousands ...
So far it has been a free service, I bet they will come up with a subscription plan for this.
It is an example of leveraging user generated content to the benefit of all.

Thanks Louis.  I think I knew vaguely that the TomTom units had a data sharing feature but I know I didn't know any specifics of it.  Wish that Garmin allowed something comparable.

I'm with you.  I'm on my second GPS in three years.  Technology changes and stuff wears out.  As long as I am using portable GPS units, I'll just give the old one to someone and buy the latest greatest new one every three or four years ;)

Youze guys going to make me think what my wife says about me (cheap ___) is true. I've got maps older then some of youze GPS. :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2: I understand technology changes and more features may be added, but other then features isn't a GPS just to get you from point a to point b? Unless mine gets broke or stolen I'll more then likely keep it longer then 3/4 years. :nixweiss: Heh, but I'm the one that will buy a (new) vehicle and keep it for ten years too. ;D Hmmmm, maybe the wife is right.  :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:
