Moisture Issue???
« on: January 08, 2009, 01:29:33 PM »

  I have a 40 x 60 uninsulated pole barn with 4" concrete floor over packed gravel.  I purchased a 10 x 12 shed kit from Duramax.
I laid 5 mil plastic on the concrete floor and built a Plywood base, to which I added my shed.  Neither of these buildings are heated.
When it gets cold outside the buildings are even colder.  The humidity here in New Jersey oft times will create moisture on my bikes.
The pole barn is hard to heat.  Too much square feet.  I have used a small heating unit in the shed, but that is a little worrysome.

I guess I am looking for someone to ease my mind with a safe solution or to tell me not to worry about my previous attempts.  If I could get the bikes through my doors, I would have brought them into the house.  Much to the chagrin of the Mrs.

Actually, when I lived in NJ, my buddy kept his classic cars in a building with dirt floors. He said that the dirt pulled in the moisture, that a sealed floor doesn't allow for moisture in the air to escape. Not sure if the is true logic, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

How bout a low temp dehumidifier??
Thanks GH, I Have to admit that never entered my mind.  Although it needs to be small.  My 3 1/2 bikes and riding gear take up most of the space.  I think I would build a bigger (Hog Pen) shed, if I could remedy the moisture.

Try a small biscuit fan to exchange the air before bringing the temperature up to above the dewpoint

I use one in my three car garage with great success. It's very small ... maybe 24'' tall by 12'' wide .... picked it up at Sears a few years ago.

Maybe one of those Harley storage bubbles with the filtered fan would help you? You would need one for each bike though of course.

You do not need high heat just enough to raise the dewpoint of the enclosure.

This is what I would suggest too. These work well, and there are also units which have a dehumidifier built in. It is actually some kind of reactivatable stuff, so there is no ongoing cost. It is also offered by classic car specialists.

Ride safely,
Louis

I've used something called a Carcoon in the past here in the UK,  I think it's just as Louis says - need electricity though, but it will even dry off the bike.

You must be able to get something like that in the US

I have a wood working shop in a barn with concrete floor . I had the same problem ,what I did was found where the watter puddles out side and drained that area with a curtain drain and then put a large oscillating fan in the shop to keep the air moving. Worked excellently , no more wet floors no more rust on my tools. Might be just the thing for you. Good Luck.
