What would you do first
« on: January 08, 2009, 08:52:48 PM »

I know (or at least I'm hoping) I'm going to open a can of worms with the following question.  Put yourself in my shoes for a moment and you now own the stock 09 harvest orange CUSE4 to your left.  You have somewhere between $500 to $1000 to spend on enhancements before the ol' wife tosses you out on your keester, and that's all you're going to have for a couple of years.  What changes in the stock would you do first, and why, and what do you think it would cost? :soapbox: :nixweiss:

Pipes, ECM, A/C. She'll never see it and the rest is just eye candy.

Do what I had to do to make the motor last (get rid of the lean EPA restrictive conditions)... exhaust/intake/tuner.

Exhaust will be subjective to what you like in looks and sound. I have Rinehart tru duals on my bike, but if I needed pipes today I'd get D&D Fatcats. Try to look/listen to as many combinations of exhaust you can find and decide what works best for you. If it's performance you're after normally you'll get better performance out of a 2 into 1 then you will out of tru-duals. Intake can't really be seen (backplate, and free flowing filter) but there are several companies including H-D that you can achieve the end results with. In regards to what method (product) you use to tune it after doing the above mods your best bet is to find someone you feel confident that can do the tune for you, and go on their recommendations for the tuning product. They will be the one tuning your bike and more then likely what they recommend will be what they will be proficient in using.

Hard10 and Fired00d -- any particular recommendations for your suggestions?

A/C is easy: "Roll Your Own". This was a very popular thread a few years ago. (Had to do some research to find where the info went.  ;))

Pipes ~ as Gary said, it a matter of taste. What sound you like. Fulsacs' were not popular when I did mine. I have what I feel to be the only aftermarket pipes that should go on a dresser: Rinehart True Duals. You on the other hand have the new 2 into 1 into 2 setup.

EMC ~ Ask 5 people and get 9 answers. There are threads on the two most popular: Power Commander and Harley's Super SERT. There are pro's and con's of each. Decide who is (competently) going to do the work and ask them.

My install came to about $1800 with pipes, air cleaner, Power Commander, and Dyno runs. I think most people here will tell you that this is the first step you should take.

Good luck and whatever you do, don't let wifey see this site or you'll never be allowed back.  :D :D :D

The guidance given above covers it for what you laid out. Don't worry, it won't stop there. We all thought there was a stopping point too. LOL

No, no, no.  First thing you do is buy something special for the wifey - diamonds, pearls, etc.  Then that ole bank account will open right up.   :2vrolijk_21:

I've lived in those shoes for 2 years now, and with the purchase of the SERG, I'll wear them for another few years.

There's actually two legitimate lines of thought here. It all starts with "just letting her breathe a little better". It could be compared to "the leg bone's connecting to the hip bone". Just a better air breather, some slip ons or a complete exhaust, and a slight modification to the ECM to richen her up. The problem with only modifying the leg bone while maintaining a stock hip bone, is the stock hip bone restricts the potential performance of the leg bone. Wifes will generally be ok with a modified hip bone, but, whenever you start modifying the leg bone, even a good woman will get frustrated with your decisions. It's a catch 22. You and I both know you have to modify the leg bone. Do you want your HD to be right or your marriage? If you're like me, I prefer both. $500-$1,000 budget restrictions are unrealistic as we both know, but wives don't know that, at first. Knowledge is power. At some point the wife will figure out the budget is blown. Just how far can you take it before she balks?

The second line of thought is the approach I've decided to take with the second bike, at least for now. No new slip ons. No exhaust change. No ECM changes. It breathes like a man with a sinus infection, but, it's a HD.  I have two. One breathes good, this one doesnt.

Hope this helps.
