replacing 110in with Jims 120in
« on: January 10, 2009, 11:24:22 AM »

Ok what do you guys think about replacing the 110 with a 120.  Main purpose is more power and getting rid of the noise around 3000rpm.
What size TB should I use 58mm or 62mm?

Check with Ken, 'hogbreath' because he has done just that.  If I recall correctly his dealer initially told him the stock tb would be OK but it was not and he had to change to a larger tb.  You can pm him or just do a search.  There was a thread about this last year.

You won't hear me tellin ya not to do it Dave, that's for sure! Not like we have many choices either. That, the 131, or build a complete one with your own cases. The 120 is a good, cost effective alternative. Personally, for a lil more, I'd go w/the 131. But anything's better than the stockers! ;)

Save the money that would go to the Jim's and buy that classic o/b Road Glide.

Just wondering how the Jim's engines hold up.  The 131 is pretty new and it may be too early to tell.  Personally I prefer the 131 because it has the upgraded oil pump, the hydraulic cam chain tensioners, etc., that the moco added in 07.  I'd be concerned about the 120 because you still have the issue of the oil style cam chain tensioner problems.  With the 131 being such a monster just wonder how it would hold up over many '000 of miles and how it would be for a rider like me who likes to tour, wants good power and most especially torque down low, but is not interested in all out acceleration or speed.

mr_magoo,

I went the Jims 120 route, only changes, had Vortec Head work by SBC (Short Block Charlie, Phoenix, sometimes lurks on the board and posts once in awhile), S&S 625 Cams, rest engine stock, Kuraykyn 57mm TB c/w 6.63 injectors and V&H Pro Pipe. After proper tuning using custom SERT map JARZ Performance just North of you in Abbostford BC, bike dyno at 131 hp and 134 TQ.

put n over 15,000 miles with no problem until one of the Jims Lifters cratered and took out the engine.

Jims replaced the engine, I sold the bike and now the new owner had put on another bunch of miles with no problems. I know jims had a new generation lifter.

I also had SBC assemble a 120, he raised compression, did a bit of head work, welded and rebalanced crank, after only 1500 miles ( alot of high rpm) when a lifter started bleeding down, replaced with Harley B lifter and took the opportunity to put in  T-Man 650G cams , nice all around combo, and you have the option to sell or have a spare engine, but I suggest changing lifters right up front, cheap insurance.

I've heard the early 120's had a lifter recall but nothing after that.  Not sure about the 131in motor, like the newer cam tensioner but haven't seen a lot of them out there.

In stock configuration, the only thing "race" about a Jim's motor is its potential and the absence of an EPA certification. The 120 and 131 are both very conservatively tuned for about 1HP per cu in. I would expect either to be both durable and reliable.  Hot rod either of them to get into the kinds of numbers large displacement motors are capable of and you begin to compromise their reliability and long term durability.

Want it to be a touring bike to pull a trailer, we take long trips so reliability is important.
