Rumble/Vibration
« on: January 12, 2009, 10:00:38 AM »

Okay....dumbass question #2 for the week..........

This is my first 110, but have been throgh a few 88's and a 103.  Planning to pop into dealership today and ask.....but!   When ya'll downshift on the 110 and ease the clutch out do you get a rumble/vibration though the seat.  I know it's a Harley and I know it sounds kinda stupid, but it has never been there before.  Can't decide if it is a characteristic of the 110 or if something is wrong.  The new 09 is the smoothest ride under acceleration and crusing it is the cats meow!  It almost feels like the exhaust is connected to the seat.  It is just this side of what an unbalanced or under inflated tire feels like (minus the handlbars shaking).

Any insite any one has would be appreciated.

Yep, that's another of the vibrations I have on mine.  Bet it is "normal".

If you still have the stock '09 cross-under exhaust, that may be normal.  I know with my 07, I don't experience what you're describing, but I'm running true duals.   :nixweiss:

I'm not sure if this is what you're talking about or not, but I'll give my impression.

I have an '08 SERK and as you all know it's a rubber mounted motor/trans/swingarm etc.

At idle there is the normal motor vibration and the mirror will jiggle a bit too.  Once you let out the clutch the bike does a complete smooth out and I've not felt anything this smooth since my wife's.... Well you know what I mean.

I rode this bike many miles and then one time going down a hill at somewhere in the 40 mph range for some reason I pulled in on the clutch and let it coast a bit.  As soon as the motor hit idle, moving or not, the idle vibration that I have at a stop light came back.  As soon as I re-engaged the clutch the motor smoothed right back out.  I tried this at different times while riding and at idle rpms I always get this vibration.

So depending on how long you're holding in the clutch between shifts or if it's just a once in a while happening, this may be your vibration.

If not, all the other guys with the exhaust hitting here or there, loose motor mount etc, could be something to look at.

Good luck and let us know what the dealer has to say.

Nope, mine ('07 SERK true duals) will do it when you roll off the throttle with the clutch out, more so in the first four gears.  It also about bounces the front tire off the ground at idle, and vibrates the floor boards at 3K.  I've given up trying to have my dealer look into anything; they lost interest in the bike when it rolled out the door the first time.

Gecko, almost sounds like you had crank spin, My 07 SEUC did not display any of those symptoms nor does my 09 SERG these cranks are just pressed together and supposedly even downshifting at too high rpms can move them with the result your describing

Got My answer....... Chalk one up to my finely tuned Harley Davison Ass with over 220K miles on it.

Turns out there was a loose bolt lodged on the back side of the primary up against the frame.  Our super tech here took it around the block as assured me what I was feeling was not a typical 110 feeling.  The bolt would come out of play at speed, but at decel as the motor settled it was not letting it settle onto the rubber mount.   Hence the vibration I was feeling in me seat!

He checked the bike over and could not find anything missing.  He said that particular bolt is only in 2 places that he is aware of, (battery box and fuel tank) and all of mine were there.  He is double checking the parts list and will confirm with me tomorrow.

I griped a little about the PDI and they are going to double check who did it as well.  Super tech felt it may have been missed due to how few 110's come in, they (PDI crew) may not have known it to not be normal either.  He told me Saturday we can put it on a lift together and inspect for any damage or parts that need to be replaced.

LESSON:  Trust yourself and your instricts I guess!

Congrats on finding the "culprit".  Sounds like you may have some rub damage to the frame or inner primary though.  When you have it on the stand make sure you give a very close look in that area.

You are lucky the tech didn't just come back and tell you that what you are feeling is normal.  Too much of that going around.  That's their easy way out until the bike breaks down.  Glad to hear you got the problem solved.

Soon as I get smart enuf to figure out how!  I have a choice everyday when I wake up of being pretty or smart.....and dangit....I keep picking pretty!

Hope your ride on Sunday to WOB was great.  We did make it to College Station and then over to Yankee's in Carlos.  The ride back in on FM3090 was awesome.  That new 09 frame eats corners compared to my 04.  Plus I found out you can drag a floorboard on that un-lowered 09, you just have to be going fast enuf into the corner to do it! :orange:
