How do you prevent rust in end of Fullsac insert?
« on: January 12, 2009, 02:49:03 PM »

I know the first answer is not to get water in my mufflers.  I did get some water in the end of the mufflers when I washed the bike.  Now there are rust stains inside the ends of the Fullsac inserts.  Is there anything that can be put on there to keep this from happening?  Maybe a few sprays of some high heat paint?  I wish I had thought of it before I put them in.  I think I would have hit that entire end that sticks out with some black high heat paint before installing them.  That might not be a bad idea for those that haven't put theirs in yet.

I've painted with rust inhibitor before the black high heat paint.

But I'm not sure for result with the heat.

I think I'm just going to go out and grab something off the shelf at Pep Boys or something.  It's such a small area, that I don't think I'm going to worry much if it needs redone at a later date.  I'm only planning on doing the inner part of the pipe and mainly concerned with just the bottom half that is visible from behind the bike.  I think I'll stuff a rag in the muffler so I'm not spraying inside the muffler body, and tape of the chrome on the outside so I don't make a mess out of this.  Like I said, it sure would have been easier to do this before the install, but I'm not going to take the mufflers off and apart for this little job.

Put some miles on it and the rust will go away.

That's easier said than done.  The streets are still white here.  They are covered with snow and when the snow is gone, the streets are still white and covered with salt.  In these parts, you have to have the snow melts and then a good rain storm to clean the roads before it's riding time again.  I couldn't care less that the temp is only around 20 degrees.  I have heated gear to deal with that.  I refuse to destroy my bike with all the salt on the roads and the snow doesn't need more explanation.  You're in Texas.  You probably don't have these problems to contend with.

It's actually quite easy to remove the baffles......try some BBQ flat black paint (got it from Home Depot).
I've got about 5k miles on both my bikes since the Fullsac baffles......no runs, no hits, no errors. I don't worry about rust, I seldom wash my bikes, and it never rains around here.
Got to about 85 degrees here on the end of the pier.....whew....'09 was putting off some heat! Oil temp at 240!! Kinda envy some of you guys with cooler temps in your part of the world!

The stock baffles do not come treated at all. I would not worry about the rust, spray so WD 40 in there and it will be OK.  Doc

Won't the WD-40 just burn up and smoke?

Currently we are painting the exit ends of the inserts with Hi temp BBQ paint. The originals sets were raw steel. I usually don't put any effort into painting the inside of the tip. Black carbon usually covers the inside within a few miles of riding. Out here in the AZ desert things stay a lot dryer and we don't see things rusting like the rest of the country. Lately, due to request, I have been making the exit tips 1" shorter than stock. Purely cosmetic, but if they are tucked in and less visible a little interior rust from lack of use might go unnoticed.
I'm always open to suggestions. Feel free to offer up.

I had that thought of cutting off an inch or so, but I thought it might end up with excess carbon build up on the the end of the chrome extensions.

For now, I cleaned up the area with WD-40.  Once I get some riding weather and put some miles on, I'll see if it's a problem that I ever worry about again.  Or, if I remember to pick up some high temp paint, I may just take care of it yet this winter.  It took about a minute to clean both out yesterday, so I don't suppose it's that big a problem that I have to keep it at the forefront of my mind to deal with.  I'm glad to hear that Fullsac has started painting that area now.  It's great when a company listens to it's customers and makes product improvements.
