I just received an email from High Desert Harley Davidson IMPORTANT NOTICE: States that Harley-Davidson has cut Spring and Summer Production Number. They have over 300 new and 150 used bikes in stock. %4.9 financing for 48 months.

I cannot find any new info on the Web.

For sure I'd send eMails like that, if I would be a dealer and have 450 bikes on the floor. OMG. Besides that, of course Harley has to cut production numbers. For most people buying a new Harley is entirely discretionary, and anyone readsing the papers knows that discretionary spending is off. People have simply closed their wallets.

Ride safely,

That would be nice, but anybody offering 4.9% rate is buying down the rate, harley dealers cannot get 4.9% money.  You are getting 4.9% rather than a cash discount, although some may still discount the price, but it costs them to get that rate down.  (That's why the auto manufacturers advertised offers are for low financing, or discounts, but not both.)

Never but somebody else will.  You got good credit?  Look around.
See below:

My credit union is doing 6.5% financing on new bikes up to 72 months.

Of course thats for a new bike.  But you surely could do better outside.  I guess you realize the dealer gets a piece of that percentage for getting you to finance.

I popped into my local dealership today and discovered that they are doing 0% finance on selected models. Now is that a "Times are tough" statement or not. The Sales guy I spoke to said he thought it wasn't a good thing and that it portrayed the wrong image, but I guess like everyone else at the moment they are having to work hard to get sales.

Now if they would only cut the price about 3K per bike.  I think you may be getting somewhere.  I had a dealer tell me in 1982 if he couldn't get 5K profit per bike he was going out of business.  Not only is he still in business, they just broke ground on a brand new building.  They might not be selling like they were, but you can bet they won't have to tighten thier belts like the rest of us.

Like to know how they did that.  Seems to me bikes had an msrp of around $7-8K.  Not sure how to make $5K, but good for him.  Evidently he's still got the magic because it is not a good time to be a Harley dealer in some parts of the country, no matter how you conduct business.

You're right Harley56.  I think my 1980 FXSB was around 8K.  Maybe he was just showing off.  I never gave much thought to the MSRP.  I just hung on to his statement.  I bought my next 3 HDs elsewhere.

Further production cuts seem inevitable, as the Moco has announced them today amongst also announcing new lay offs. Guys, hold on to your bikes!

Harley-Davidson [HOG  11.01    -1.39  (-11.21%)   ] shares were getting pounded after the motorcycle maker said it would lay off 1,100 workers and close plants as a global consumer slowdown battered its business and sent earnings below Wall Street estimates.

None of this can be good at any level, MoCo, Dealers or consumers.
