Here is the way I see it:  The sooner we accept where the economy is and get on with business, the better off we will all be.

For the businesses that are still thriving, congrats!  You folks have the widget that everyone wants or still needs (at this time).  As for the rest of us, we need to adjust and start heading forward again.

There ain't gonna be a magical fix.... No one or nothing is gonna fix our economy in the blink of an eye.  I really don't think we will see the stock market back up to 13K anytime soon, and we all ain't gonna be fat and happy like we were before this all went down (most folks know that the economy was artificially pumped up and destine to deflate anyway).

If you work for someone else and still have a good secure job, count yourself fortunate.  If you are like me and are a business owner, adjust and get busy heading forward again from where you are.... That's probably the way you built your business in the beginning anyway.

Just the way I see things ;)

I agree, I think this is point on.  My business is landscaping and that is a luxury to most.  I will regroup and do whatever it takes to make it work.  I am and always will be a survivor.
I personally feel the stock market is the ruination of many a good business or product.  How somebody buying and reselling futures can effect the final cost of a product is beyond me.  Its only worth what somebody is willing to pay for.  Nobody on wall street in a 3 piece suit has any business telling Don what he should get for his milk.

I'm in the construction business in California and it is about dead. As it sits now, new home and commercial builds are the lowest since 1982. Most people have bought over their heads due to the loose money and low qualifying terms which were available in the recent past.  Those individuals who are staying in their homes can't sell even if they wanted to due to the depreciating home values.  Unemployment is high and the State is going to begin to issue IOU's for payments to vendors. Most home owners are hard pressed to pay their mortgage and the forclosure rate increases every month. Normally when this cycle hits Calif. people have a tendency to remodel or add onto their homes and keep them. Not now, as we all know money is near impossible to get, and those who can get funding are in a survival mode buying only what they need. We do not expect it to get any better till mid 2010 at the earliest.  But alas there is a fix in the work at the Fed level and we all know how efficient they are at correcting problems.  Kind of reminds me of the MoCo. So with this in  mind I don't think I will be buying the new scooter this year. Who knows 2011 may be a great year for Harley Davidson after all..

I thought it would be interesting to see how the Economy slow down has affected everybody around the country in our different lines of work! As some of you know I'm in the Cattle industry (ISelBulls) Well 2008 was my best year ever, Boy! but in just one month the Milk futures dropped over 50% it doesn't look good for atleast the first six months of the year! I hate living like a common person! :huepfenlol2:

Don..........
I'm recession proof...thankfully jackasses around the world keep wanting to die for their country, or religion or some other ideology - keeps me busy.

If things get any slower at UPTOWN CYCLE, we'll be laying off at least one mechanic and probably one of the guys who helps out on the paint shop side. Seems like everybody's waiting for money to fall from the sky or something. The only work we're getting is routine maintenance and very very minimal parts sales. I don't collect any salary for helping with parts sales (I do it to keep busy) so obviously they'll be hanging on to me  LOL ANyway, the thing I find interesting is that our regular customers are all working. We haven't had any of them tell us they've been laid off etc, they're just not spending any money. Since a lot of our regulars are folks with a little money in investments, I'm assuming it's the huge losses everyone's taken in the stock market that is killing spending on luxury items. (yes Virginia, an H-D is a luxury item )

The energy sector is still good, and I am sure gald I swicted from the automotive manufacturing to off shore drilling back in 05.

We have no slow down, infact we have growth.  My company is building four new drill ships and will be hiring about 1000 people this summer.

However my wifes line of work died early 08.  She was laid off in Feb, as she was in the mortgage loan section of banking at a small town bank.  She has not found a job yet in loans, but is now substitute teaching at significantly less money.  On the bight side I get to spend lots more time with her on my two weeks off each month.
