New Base Gaskets??
« on: January 16, 2009, 01:41:11 PM »

I've pulled most of the top end apart on my Ultra to have the heads done.  Not doing anything with the pistons or jugs, but since I've had to pull the headbolts the jugs are of course loose.  Should I pull the jugs off and replace the base gaskets (think thats what they are called) while I'm in here??  Just really don't wanna screw with the pistons if I don't have to.  I'm doing the cams also but will wait til the heads are back on so I don't have to move the crank any with the jugs loose, so the jugs shouldn't be moved any.

Once I release a gasket from the torque it's been under during prior operation, I will never try to reuse it. Might hold up, might not. But to take the top end off just to do a base gasket when you just had it apart, doesn't seem worth the risk to me. And if it were mine, I'd be recrosshatching the cyls and putting new rings in too. That's not official HD or anything, JMO! ;)

I pulled the heads on my 2002 FXD ,5 times {porting} and NEVER touch the base gaskets { O-RING} but you might want to put in the NEW SQUARE o-ring. I pulled the heads 1 time on my 2007 CVO Springer , never pulled the cyl. As long as you don't 'move' the cyl. around ,you are fine. Remember ,its RUBBER !  Dewey

Most likely they are OK to re-use, but why risk it?

I'm confused. With the top end apart, the relatively cheap cost of gaskets and rings, and a quick recross hatch, why chinse out on this. Do the top end over the right way and know everything's fresh and new, all at the same time! It would sure suck to start seeing seepage from a base gasket in 3K miles. Or blue smoke from your exhaust at 6K, after you were just in there! ;)

Hoist is right.  New cylinder base gaskets, rings and hone the bores at the least.  Sounds like a plan!   :nixweiss:

IF your cyl. look fine {cross-hatch} why bother. Remember ,the 'base' gaskets are RUBBER. If you pull the cyl. then you will need NEW rings ,just my opion ,which is worthless. I could buy 4 boxes of doughnuts with that 'ring' money.  Dewey

As far as I know the moco isn't supplying rings for the recall, so how is that being handled?

Rings are cheap, tearing it down again later isn't.
