Advanced Audio Navigation/GPS Info
« on: September 17, 2005, 04:13:41 AM »

The Harley website is finally displaying some new info on the GPS system that is another accessory to the new radio.  On the website it is described as "now available" but there are no new part numbers in the P&A section yet.  The system seems, quite frankly, wholly unremarkable compared to contemporary standards of even average automotive GPS systems.  No mapping display at all.  Turn indicators and trip calculations are apparently about it.

Nothing in the website blurb about the storage medium for its data.  One would almost have to assume that the GPS kit will include some type of card reader for a data source.  Otherwise the CD player would almost have to be able to read a DVD disk as well and use a DVD for source info.  But that would mean no music to navigate by.  Bummer  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Here is the text supplied by Harley to describe the new add-on and a picture of what it'll look like in use courtesy of the HD website:

While you are roaming the great wide open, enjoy the peace of mind of knowing where you are and where you are going with the Advanced Audio GPS Navigation System. GPS, or Global Positioning System, is a network of satellites that continually send and receive signals to your Advanced Audio System to inform you not only about where you are and how to get to where you are going, but also about the location of the nearest points of interest, gas stations, restaurants, and rest areas.

If you miss a turn or exit, GPS will automatically reroute you to your destination. You will know the exact location of yourself and your vehicle if you need to call for assistance. And, it can provide you with useful information such as upcoming maneuvers and updated predictions of your time to arrival.

Provides location and directions to points of interest and emergency facilities

Lets you know your exact location

Automatic rerouting if you miss a turn or exit

Gives you an estimated time to your destination

If there really is no mapping that sucks.  Although the other info is nice the mapping is the feature that I think is most helpful on the GPS.  Maybe end up adding the traditional add on GPS to my unit instead.  Will have to see and learn more later to know for sure.

Have to wait to see how the routes get programed. Lack of graphic display for me is not a problem. I am still impressed with the bluetooth module works good. Has more engineering to it than was indicated in pre-release articles. Maybe this Nav system will be same.
I have a garmin for a few years now. First mounted it on the bars. Decided for safety reasons to just let it run tour-pack. It's a GPSIII plus slow, small, unreadable in sunand no audio. I use it for fakowee puposes during a pit stop. [smiley=juggle2.gif]

They finally got the Nav unit listed in P&A.  Its part number 76471-06.

They're even prouder of it than I expected they'd be.  Asking price of $1099.95 !  Yikes!

That's even more expensive than the radio itself!  For a relatively limited GPS capability?  Somehow wonder if this is going to be a big seller  [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

Oh well.....  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Here's the parts blurb:

Advanced Audio Navigation System

The Advanced Audio Navigation system uses GPS satellites to help guide you to your destination. Simply enter in your destination using the radio buttons, and the system will plot your trip by fastest or shortest route. Then follow the turn-by-turn arrows on the radio display and the voice guidance prompts for clear directions. Find nearby destinations by using the "Points of Interest" function that can locate gas stations, restaurants, or hotels. Exclusive to Harley-Davidson

Hale's Harley already has it included at their normal 20% off (they are my "online dealer" on the HD website).  But that's still $879.96.  That's just a fracking lot of money for a somewhat minimalist nav unit anymore  [smiley=nixweiss.gif]

Would always be convenient to have though.  So if you go for it be sure and report in.  And don't forget:  [smiley=worthless.gif]

Thanks for the info. I will give a report once I get the thing installed. $900.00 is steep but the unit completes the ensemble so to speak. This whole radio system costs more than some of the bikes(or cars) I have owned. No one on the planet is going to take anything with them when it's time to go. [smiley=huepfenjump3.gif]

Got to admit Jerry, getting started on the system and not having it "complete" would be a thorn in my craw too  [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif] .  Definitely let us know how she goes.
