2009 Stock Exhaust Systems
« on: January 18, 2009, 02:36:47 PM »

As I understand it, the biggest reason for the re-routed exhaust on the 2009 models was the issue of heat on the rider and especially passengers legs. With may of you removing your stock exhaust systems and replacing them with various aftermarket systems, I was wondering if anyone knows if the 09 stock exhaust can be fit up to a pre-09 model H-D ? My 07 has heat issues and a set of stock 09 headpipes would go a long way toward resolving the problem. Can anyone shed some light on this ?

Thanks

Just thinking out loud, but wouldn't the frame changes done on the 09's have some significance to how the pipes were routed too. In other words because of those changes might that hinder them (the pipes) from being used on earlier models. :nixweiss:

Well Chip got the FatCat to fit the '09. Gotta be close enough that a few brackets or clamps should get it done. But then again, that's going from older to newer. Might not work going newer to older due to the frame changes underneath. Good question. :confused5:

I was thinking the same thing. But, it might be interesting to try. On my 02 RG, I took the header pipes and had them ceramic coated inside and out. It made a huge difference in the amount of heat coming off the pipes.

You won't be able to route the clutch side pipe under the frame/swingarm as there isn't enough room on the 08 and older bikes.  Not that I have tried to do it, just "pretty" sure it can't be done.

I have a 2007 Road Glide and have installed the 09 exhaust on it. The oil pan needs to be replaced, about an $90.00 item and the case at the rear of the transmission needs to be drilled and tapped for the safety bracket that holds the pipe up that crosses over to the left. The pipes need to be slid on as far as they will go because the swingarm on a 09 is 1/2" longer than previous years, but that is no big deal. The pipe is much better than anything Harley has built to date, for that matter better than anyone has built. One note of caution don't buy one that comes off a CVO they have cat's in them. I have not ridden in extreme heat yet, however I think it makes a big difference. I also think it looks better and I am convinced it will perform better. I have a brace from bagger brace ordered and will be putting that on in a week or so, I had a tru-track but that will not work with 09 exhaust. :)

Great info HDMAN!!! Can't get any better forensics than that!!! Thanks man! :2vrolijk_21:

To me though, for all the trouble and unless you paricularly like the factory style exhaust, a 2:1 is the way to go! Heat wise, it's the same thing. Performance wise, the FatCat rules! ;)

none of the 2 into 1's will fit with a sidecar - the stock 09 header will. :orange: and even if the performance was exactly the same - lower heat would be a BIG boon  :bananarock:

two questions - what is the part number of the pan needed - do you have pictures of the hole that needs to be drilled & does the pipe sit below the frame or is it even with the frame on your 07?

i assume that tire clearance is whats close since the new swing arm is longer - but since i run a 15" steel belted radial ground clearnce is my big concern.

along the same lines, can I use the header from a non CVO ultra on a SERG3? found a complete 09 ultra exhaust but dont know if I can swap this out instead of having to drill out the cc. thanks

The oil pan part number is 62490-99 in black wrinkle and 62490-99A for a silver one. Caution make sure they don't have an old one in stock because the part number is the same for the 09 as previous years, it needs the indent for the pipe, and by the way they are improved no springs to fight with the baffle is riveted in place. I wish I had taken photos when I drilled the holes for the bracket, but there are two 1/4" bolts that hold the bracket for the crossover pipe. I will post pictures in a week or so when I have my bike on the lift to install the brace. I did not find it difficult to drill and tap the two bolts, if you want take a good look at one on your dealership floor that worked great for me. It is a little offset the right of the tranny. Ground clearance should not be an issue, and what I meant to say is that the location when the muffler bolts to the brace on an 09 is 1/2" further back towards the rear of the cycle. :) :)

HDMan,

Did you ever get any pictures?  I am considering this for my 07.

Thanks,

Yes.  They're identical in size & shape.  HD recommends new gaskets throughout.
