Oil consumption on 110 C.U. engines
« on: January 19, 2009, 10:51:48 AM »

A fellow CVO owner told me yesterday that he was told by a dealership mechanic that it was common for the 110 engine to burn 1 quart of oil per 1000 miles ! My response was WHAT? Has anyone else heard of this, or better still, experienced it? A quart of oil every thousand miles seems ridiculous to me. Please respond if anyone has information on this or has heard of it before.
Thanks,
Glider !

Sounds to me they are referring to the two stroke models.

That has been HD's standard for all models for years, 1 qt per 1000 is within Company specs, saves them millions on engine tear downs.

Same kind of chit the auto companies thow at customers also.  Had an Isuzu Rodeo several years ago that used about that much.  Never could get them to do anything at all.  I just had to top it off between oil changes but I wasn't happy about it.  If my Harley used anywhere near that much I'd make sure something was done about it.  I mean, a car is a car, but a Harley is a motorcycle.

They must be talking about how much they leak before the enhancement!

I have a 08 SERK and it uses oil also. Not quite a guart/ 1000 miles, but it does use it. Convinced that it is because the engine comes from the factory with synthetic oil. MHO they should be broke in with real oil first. But what do I know? :nixweiss:

Broke in 3 engines with synthetic with no problem at all.  No oil usage after break in.

Mine uses about .5 to .75 qts per 1k miles. By looking at the plugs it seems to be the valve seals. Going to replace them when update is done.

Mine has a little over 5,000 miles on it.  Didn't have to add anything between the 1k and 5k services.

Just started leaking oil a few weeks ago.  Guess I'll have to watch it closely while waiting for the parts to come in.

I've got 32000 miles on my '07 110" and I use 1 quart every 800 miles! Yeah, I'm upset! The service manager at my local dealership told me the exact same thing: 1 qt / 1000 miles. I am next on the list to have the "enhancement" done and we're going to discuss this at that time.

Coming up on 6,100 and total SYN 3 oil added has been around one quart-this excludes the total loss when the head gasket let loose on the dyno!

OK, the maximum useage considered "normal" by H-D is 1000 miles per quart, and your bike only gets 800 miles per quart.  No debate needed, it's worse than Harley's own BS standard and therefore needs to be fixed under warranty.

When they do the "enhancement", you may find that the new head assemblies fix the problem.  I understand they come with all the parts already installed, including new valve stem oil seals.  When they pull the jugs they really should also do the rings with 32k on the clock, but I'm sure H-D would say that is your responsibility.  If they refuse to do it, you definitely should consider doing it yourself.

I change oil 2500-3000 miles.  Even with the leak(s), I have never had to add oil.  2 motors, 18000 miles total.  It may have been down half a quart when changed.

A quart of oil every 800-1K seems like a lot of oil to me. I'd be raising hell with the dealer to fix it... or finding another dealer that would...
