That is exactly how I found out mine was fused too. :-\ The hard way. Mine shorted out on the frame during a cold mountain ride.
Felt like the 2 guys from dumb and dumber when they arrived in Aspen when I reached my destination, because the electric vest was no longer working.

If you have the rheostat on the heated clothing and plug it in backwards (reverse the ends) it will trash the rheostat and the clothing will not work as well. (don't ask how I know this)  The dealer had warned me about it.  This may have been changed on newer units but that's the way it worked two years ago and the don't warranty stupid.
