Is this a good deal?
« on: January 22, 2009, 09:40:02 PM »

I told my friend to post this question on here, and I don't think he did, so...  He's looking at a 2008 SE Ultra (Copper Canyon/Silver) with about 10,000 miles on it.  It's had the campaign done.  From what I remember him telling me, it has a 271 cam, SEProTuner, D&D 2 into 1 exhaust, adjustable push rods.  This part is sketchy...he read off to me Stage II Billet Sucker with a price of $224.95.  I'm assuming it's a big sucker air cleaner.  It's been dyno'd and he doesn't have the results of that.  It just had the 10,000 mile service and he's buying it from the dealer.  Apparently the prior owner is caged up and no longer free to roam throughout society.  The price is $29,000 and he's trading his 2003 SE Road King for it and getting decent $'s for the trade (like $17,500 I think).  Any thoughts?  Good deal or pass?

If there is nothing wrong with it, it's probably about right.

A friend of ours bought a 2008 SEUC same colors about 2 weeks ago for $23,500.00 from a car dealer here that is getting intothe used motorcycle business. Dealer purchased from auction in Atlanta, bike was a repo, a real deal, bike ran out great.

29K for a 10K mile bike that retailed for 35K new is to high. The motor mods don't add to the retail/resale value. Bike should be about 25-26K in my opinion.

Now 17.5K for the Road king trade-in is a good deal. I recently saw one on ebay for 10.5 "buy it now"

By trading at the dealer, he save $1225 in taxes, which makes it more like getting $18725 for his.  Do you think he can get that for it easily?

In this market he would be lucky to get 15K

I'm thinking the same and that it comes out to still not being a real bad deal because of what he is getting for his trade.  If they came down on the trade by $3-4K, then they could drop the price of the bike by the same, but there's no difference there, as far as I can see.  The only thing I really worry about is how it runs.  I'm assuming that the bike is good, as the service manager at the dealer is his wife's cousin or something like that.  I don't think he would steer him wrong.

The other thing I'm considering is that he would do about the same upgrades that it already has if he found one stock.  He has the D&D 2 into 1 on his SE RK and I know he would put those exact same pipes on.  I'm figuring that with what has been done to the bike, it's got at least $2500 in upgrades parts and labor that he would do anyway.  The 08's sold for about $36K, so he's getting $7000 off plus $2500 in upgrades, plus getting a good price out of his trade.  I'm looking at it that he's saving as much as $12,500 vs buying a new one, upgrading it, and selling his SE RK himself.  Maybe I'm being overly optimistic.

Plus, if he finds a buyer for a good price on this 95th Anniversary Heritage Springer, he'll have enough to pay off the difference.

Well, he bought it.  I went to see it and talked with the service manager.  The engine has been built up a lot more than what I was told originally.  The bike just sounds like a mean machine.  The service manager told me that it runs meaner than it sounds.  I was very impressed with the salesman's walk thru of the bike.  He went through literally everything.  All controls and every menu on the radio, how to turn on/off the automatic rear cylinder shut down, even the light in the tourpack.  I learned things about my bike that I would have never figured out on my own...especially on the stereo unit.  I think I may switch dealers for my next bike.  They seemed to handle every aspect professionally there, and it was very reassuring.
