« on: January 23, 2009, 08:58:26 AM »

This Elk was killed with a bow in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness
( Montana ) . He green scored 575' and should net out at about
530' non typical. He has and unbelievable outside spread of 79'.
This is the biggest bull elk ever taken with any weapon.

I believe it was last year ...

Can you just imagine, driving across the country, after work, so starting off tired, getting as far as you can so you pull over and park in a gravel pit or something like it that makes you feel safer than parking on the side of the hiway.  You go to sleep.  You awake because your vehicle is rocking.  Outside your car is a herd of elk.  Big elk.  One of them is using your car as a scratch post.

Then imagine, looking into the eyes of that monster.

It may be good eating and it may go far, but that is one big beast, for sure.

The shorts I had on at that particular moment would be no more good... they would have to be thrown away. :shocked2: :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

Eastern Elk were hunted to extinction in mid and late 1800's.  There was an effort in the early 1900's to repopulate (where else, but) Elk Co. Pennsylvania with Western Elk from Yellowstone.  The herd is now nearly 100 years old and close to 1,000 strong.  Though far from tame they don't have a strong natural fear of humans like white tails have.  I've been to small towns like Medix Run and Benezette many times and have seen full sized (800lbs or so) bull elks in peoples back yards.  One was laying about 30 feet from a guy while he worked on his pickup in the driveway.  His dog just laid near the truck and stared.  It's very cool and a beautiful and majestic part of this great country.  Visit if you get a chance.  It's about 100 miles Northwest of State College.

Yes, and it's very good.  I've had a couple times.  There's an Elk farm about 15 miles from my house.

I wish it was me, but NOT.  I'll be very happy with a 320 class bull.
I don't think it was on a farm,  They wouldn't kill a bull like that when they can sell the rack in velvet for $30,000-50,000 to Chines (they use it as aphrodisiac) every year.   :nixweiss:

Isn't everything?  You'd think with 1.3B people they wouldn't need that or bear pancreas.

Unfortunately the elk in the picture above is farm raised.

The new World record was confirmed this month from Utah.  http://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2009/01/06/Large-racked_elk_confirmed_as_record/UPI-60361231274399/

SALT LAKE CITY, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- An elk shot by a hunter in Utah has won official recognition for the largest rack ever recorded for a non-typical American elk.

Officials have also confirmed that the animal was not raised on a farm, The Salt Lake Tribune reported. Critics had suggested that an elk with such a big set of antlers could not have survived in the wild.

Doyle Moss, of MossBack Guides and Outfitters, said that other hunters had tracked the elk, nicknamed "the Spider bull," on Monroe Mountain. He said the elk clearly behaved like a wild elk.

Moss guided Dennis Austad of Ammon, Idaho, who won a special $150,000 Utah permit giving him the right to hunt on state lands for some months. The state uses the money for conservation.

"We all knew he was a special bull, but the reality of just how big he was really set in when we walked up to him," Moss said.

The elk's rack was scored at 478 5/8 points, a figure reached through a series of measurements of the antlers. The previous record in North America was an elk found in a frozen lake in British Columbia in 1994 that scored at 465 2/8.
